Leather Shirt
What is so special about the cheapest item in the game? Leather is plentiful so you can make these without wasting resources. It's fast to craft. It's lighter than making the same shirt with furs. Putting four leather together gives a +1 Dexterity bonus that you don't get from just two leather. How important is that dexterity bonus? Sometimes it is no use at all. Sometimes it allows a character to use stealth skills in challenges and tactical combat.
Crafting Hammer
Crafting is important so crafting hammers are important. The best thing about this hammer is that it gives a +4 bonus which is only notable because a +5 bonus is very hard to get (mithril). If you don't have darkwood and gold you can make a similar hammer with steel or clay but it will be heavier, or a similar hammer with dryad wood but it takes more crafting time (which is an issue for your first hammer).
Gathering Tools
Early in the game, scaled leather makes better gathering tools than clothing. If gathering is a problem at the start of the game you can save up some straw and scaled leather to make baskets.

Clay makes similar quality tools but is incredibly heavy. Spider silk and vines make nice lightweight tools but may not have the same gathering bonus as scaled leather.
Swords with gems
Axes, hammers, and spears tend to be better combat weapons than swords. Swords however can have gems in the secondary slot. Items crafted with gems are usually light and have a random ability that looted items don't have. Topaz (and malachite) can be combined with your first ancient wood or dragon bone to make high quality weapons without using precious metals.
Spectra Kite
Shields can provide big bonuses for the amount of materials used. In this Spectra Kite the magic and leech values are higher than you'd get from the same materials in armour. It's tempting to save up lots of materials to make impressive shields but always remember to make the type of shield your characters actually need!
Skull Ring
Using the same material in the primary and secondary slot can sometimes reveal a unique ability. This is a unique recipe that gives a strength bonus. A weak character who can equip extra gear will probably get far more bonus from that gear than they would from wearing a different ring.
Tree Praying Necklace
This ring shows how the primary material provides the abilities (sturdiness, adrenaline) and the secondary material scales the abilities (up to 6). It is usually worth experimenting with recipes to find good combinations since a plentiful resource like darkwood can be just as effective as a rare material. This particular ring is an immediate solution for physical and sickness challenges.
Meeting Hall
A meeting hall allows children to grow up in new classes. The primary component gives a stat bonus to villagers. Both the elven wood and the wheat give an attract bonus based on the amount of materials used. Bigger is better. 25 Elven wood gives no attract bonus but 40 or 50 does. It's often useful to build a cheap meeting hall for classes and rebuild it later with good attraction. In general, a villager bonus is less important than attraction.
Smithy
A smithy with a good bonus is important because it gives a chance of high quality items, speeds up your important crafting, allows your non-crafters to make food. Food variety keeps your expeditions at their best. It's often worth building a cheap wooden smithy and replacing it with a level 3 later since a level 4 smithy is incredibly expensive. This version is really cheap, which is great, but similar smithies can be built with whatever materials are on hand.
Spidersilk Well
This is a unique building since the availability of spider silk drives the design. Spider silk is the only good resource that you can reliably target by hunting monster groups. With just spider silk and wood you make a well that can bring in a variety of materials that solve a lot of small gathering problems. Other wells are available, but you can pretty much plan to build this specific well in every game and never replace it.

Cabage field : cheapest way to get new characters quickly, use wheat and/or sandstone if available, but a basic recipe with vegetable and wood works fine too.

Silver Brooche : super polyvalent jewelry with damage bonuses in stealth, social, hex, intelect and tactical challenges, also the +2 stealth bonus is usefull in fight challenges, best use for silver

Dragonskin Belt (dragonbone artifact) : +3 strength with spidersilk as secondary, it's expensive but it's usefull when skull rings are not enough

Hi. Very handy guide! I think there is missing a really useful item: Small Amber Charm, since all gatherers and crafters should have them.

Not sure if that sword is worth it. 4 dragon bone is hard to come by. And it is better spent on 1h axe (dragon bone + ancient wood) with whopping 33 damage. Although gems in general play nice with equipment. Especially armour. They are very light, and give good stats.
