So if your like me, and saw full controller support on the store page and thought this would be a great game to use your steam controller with. Then you might also be more than slightly salty to find that the game does very little to directly support the steam controller right out of the box. And to make matters worse most of the community configurations are setup for mouse and keyboard (why have analog sticks and triggers if you are going to use them like an on/off swtich) or say something about needing to plug in a 360 controller for the steam controller to work.

While these may have been true at some time long ago, that is no longer the case. You can enjoy the full range of analog control the steam controller has, and not have to go buy/plugin an old 360 controller or revert the controller to some restricted keyboard and mouse setup.

For those of you with other controllers wondering why this crazy old man is incesently going on about steam controller this and that. Wondering if this might help with your controller problems, then yes these steps may also work for you. Note: if you need third party drivers to get your controller working on your system, then these steps may not help at all. Also for anyone using a playstation controller there is another GGE community guide that may help you.

Before you get started make sure the controller you want to use is plugged in and ready to go. For steam controllers make sure you are using a configuration that has analog inputs like the Recommended "Gamepad with Camera Controls", a Community config like "Analog Guzzling", or my own Community config "ThatOneGuy's Analog Gyro Enabled Config" (Link: steam://controllerconfig/243800/1329489442 ).

So first thing you need to do is get a working keyboard and mouse out (I know this is a guide for your controller but you will need these for the initial setup) so you can start to configure your controller.



Once you get to the main menu as shown above you will need to go to the right to options shown below.



This will send you to the menu you see below.



From there go to the right until you reach "Controls" if you go to "Controller Options" you have gone too far.



Then at the top of the list you should see "Input Device" which needs to be set to "Controller (XBOX 360 FOR WINDOWS)" like you see in the picture below.



Now you need to go to each of the controls below "Input Device" and press enter and then the button or input that you want to use on the controller. Once the menu navagation controls are setup you can do the rest of the config using your controller instead of the keyboard. Now go nuts and set the controls to what you want. I would recommend using analog triggers for throttle and brake/reverse and an analog stick for the steering left and right, but it can be whatever you want.

So if you want to use an analog stick to navagate menues then you would press enter on "Menu Up" and then up on the stick you want to use, then for "Menu Down" you would press enter and then down on the stick you want to use.

There you go, the game does have "Full Controller Support", but it does make you work for it more than it should IMHO.

For those wondering what Button 1, Button 2, and so on are on the actual controller here is a table for the steam controller equivalents. Depending on what steam controller configuration you are using these may vary, but the default/recommended should match with what is in the table lists.
