The road to an Estus free life

Are you struggling with Estus? Are you questioning whether or not you’re a casul?
Are you wondering if you should quit Estus altogether? Does it impact your performance?
If you’ve answered yes to any of these, it’s recommended you quit drinking Estus, and if possible, seek professional help on the forums.
Chugging kills over 240 Undeads every day. That being said, it’s scary as hell to quit something you’re addicted to, and it can be ridiculously hard.
Acknowledge

The first step is to admit you have a problem with drinking Estus. Is Estus dictating your playthrough? That one hit can be nullified with one use of your flask. But what if you didn't get hit?

Below is a chart on the probable pros and cons of consuming Estus on a regular basis. This chart is made up out of the most given answers by a 1000 polled Dark Souls players.

Benefits of chugging:
I can trade/receive hits more freely.
It makes me forget Blighttown.
The animation looks nice.

Benefits of not chugging:
My dodges and rolls would probably improve.
I'd feel better about my skirmishes.
I'd have a faster and cleaner playthrough.

Costs of chugging:
I'm stuck in an animation.
I feel casul when I do it too much.
It gets in the way of improving my performance in battle.

Costs of not chugging:
I'd have to actively avoid taking damage.
I'd have to resort to faith or level VIT past 30.
I would have to improve my skills.
Practicalities
Giving up completely may not be easy – especially if you’ve been a heavy chugger in the past.
The following tips and techniques can make it that little bit easier.

  • Tell your family and friends that you’re trying to stop using Estus and explain why. This way, you can share your successes with them, and they’ll understand why you’ve started turning down flask upgrades or trips to a bonfire.
  • Set goals. Want to challenge that cocky squire on the forums and teach them a lesson?
Work toward that goal. Give yourself an ample timeframe to work with before challenging them.
  • Frequently reminding yourself and the people close to you why you want to stop using can help keep you on track, and may even encourage someone else to give up or cut down with you.
  • Exercise like rolling and backstepping improves your lifespan significantly.
  • Reward yourself with trips to Priscilla and relax in her peaceful abode with its kind inhabitants.
Withdrawal
The first 72 hours are the most painful of recovery. As your playthrough rids itself of Estus, you'll experience acute withdrawal. Don't shy away to resort to the forums for help if you feel you can't make it through on your own during this period. During withdrawal you may experience:
  • Heavily sweating palms
  • Increased heart rate
  • Death
  • Insomnia
  • Chagrin
  • Phantom dependency (not handled in this guide)
The body is working overtime to get used to its new style of handling situations.
Give it time to adjust and don't resort to the flask just yet.
When done correctly, you'll be on your way to the MLG in no-time.
Final Words
I hope this small guide provides ample support to those in need.
Again, don't shy away to seek mental support on the forums if you require it.

Now go forth, chosen Undead.
May you be one with the sunlight for evermore.

I started my jorney and about 2 hours in, i got hit because i tried to chug, but my inventory was empty. It was a real moment of clarity, i realized how dependant i was on estus. Seeing those hollows on the undead burg chugging, i became determined to keep going forward.

@Dr.libro Blessings are what they call gateway draughts. Be careful with those.
If you're already popping humanity, I really can't help you.
Souls are fine, really. The health hazard stickers on souls are just exaggerations trying to keep the hollow down.

You kids and your abstinence. Go ahead and quit if you want, personally I will keep drinking and enjoying my estus. I could quit if I wanted to - I just don't want to.
