Coming straight from the Official Collector's Edition Strategy Guide, here is a list of treasures (either dropped by monsters or found in the world), that you should NOT sell.

They are needed to either complete quests or to upgrade weapons.

Barbed Scythe
Cactuar Needle
Couerl Whiskers
Cylinder
Dynamo
Earth Gemstone
Glass Gemstone
Magitek Core
Magnetron
Metal Scrap
Monster Claw
Repair Kit
Rusted Bits
Sky Gemstone
Spiked Armor
Sturdy Helixhorn

All other monster treasures are okay to sell for loot.

The list of monster dropped items is a lot larger than that, but according to the guide they serve no purpose other than to get gill.

There are ingredients and treasures that would be a good idea to horde, to give big effects to spells but other than that it appears the list is rather short, for stuff to keep and don't sell.

Do any of these items in the list have some kind of icon so you can tell them apart from junk items? Or am I supposed to commit this list to memory??

Ive started leaving one item alone in the inventory, never selling everything incase CID needed somthing for a weapon upgrade, or any quest NPC. Wish I had this list earlier

All other items can also be used for Elemancy to either increase the number of casts for the magic, it's potency, or to add effects to the magic (stop and poison are good options to make fights go quicker).

@angelsenvy228 why would you even need to craft spells? you realize you just hold down a button with one character and can cheese the whole game, right? no timing, just keep it held down. great game!

idk why you'd ever need to sell anything in this game, I would just use it all for spell components, I guess unless you really need money for some reason you could sell the truly garbage ingredients (stuff to make blast cast) but just do hunts which you should be doing for consumables and such anyway and you'll have hundreds of thousands of gil.
