By The Scarlet Ducky
The options menu is a bit confusing when trying to understand and remap controller buttons. Here is something to clear it up.

Introduction
Not everyone can or is comfortable playing a game with keyboard and mouse controls. World's Dawn enables players to use a controller and rebind the buttons but the options menu is very confusing. I have experimented using a Nintendo Pro-controler and here are my findings. (Unfortunately I tried doing the same experiment with my Xbox 360 controller, as that is the most popular option, but I was unable to get the game to recognize that I had a controller plugged in, although it did work with other games. I'm pretty sure that the following information will still work but I unable to verify it.)
Understanding the Options Menu
The main problem with understanding the options menu is that nothing is labeled in a way that is clearly identifiable. At first glance you can't tell which column is meant to represent the physical button and which is meant to represent the controls and the way things are labeled it's very easy to assume that the letters correspond to the physical buttons. Then, to add to the confusion the controls are listed using a 6 button controller scheme instead of the traditional console controler scheme. A person looking at the menu might be asking themselves which buttons on the controller corrispond to C and Z.

Through trial and error I was able to determine that the column listing Button 1, Button 2 etc is in fact representing the physical buttons and the drop down menus with the letters is representing the controls. But which button is Button 1? And what control is A? Here is a list:

Button 1 is the south button (B on the pro-controller / A on the Xbox controller)
2 is east
3 is west
4 is north
5 is L (LB)
6 is R (RB)
7 is ZL (LT)
8 is ZR (RT)
9 is - (Back)
10 is + (Start)

Menu option A is the Dash control
B is Cancel/Open bag
C is Interact/Confirm
X is not programmed
Y is Call Horse
Z is Call Dog
L is Tool #1
R is Tool #2
Control Schemes
Using the list provided you can of course make any control scheme that works best for you. Since my main console is the Nintendo Switch it makes the most sense to me to use a traditional Nintendo map where the east button is confirm and the south button is cancel. So I've outlined below the scheme I have come up with but if you are more used to a Traditional Xbox, Playstation map you can easily switch it around.

Button 1 - B (Cancel)
Button 2 - C (Confirm)
Button 3 - B (This is redundant but I didn't want to leave it unprogrammed.)
Button 4 - A (Dash)
Button 5 - Y (Call Horse)
Button 6 - Z (Call Dog)
Button 7 - L (Tool 1)
Button 8 - R (Tool 2)
Button 9 - (- not programmed)
Button 10 - (- not programmed)

I keep changing the keys, but it's not changing the controls. I'm trying to use my switch controller, if that helps.

I use an Xbox 360, and you cross fingers and toes and start the controller before you start the game (totally before - the little power indicator has to be lit up and steady before you even hoover over the shortcut-sorta joking but not by much) then Button 9 is the Left Joystick Pushed-in (not up and down or left and right but literally like a button) and Button 10 is the same way with the Right Joy Stick.

Okay, after some messing around and a sight headache trying to figure out what buttons go to my wired PS4 controller i have worked out--

1=Square
2=Cross
3=Circle
4=Triangle
5=L1
6=R1
7=L2/Q
8=R2/W

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, I changed the keys but nothing changed when I played the game. Maybe it's the Steam Controler.

Awesome, thanks so much. I actually have the Steam Controler, I think it is pretty close to the Xbox. At least now I have a much better idea of how it works. I'll start with your config and go from there.
