Your first game
The default settings (4^4 board, 5 mines) should be good for the first games.

I recommend starting with the "Get a nice Start!" button. This will open up a lot of the board. From there, it is best to figure out, which squares are mines, and which are not, by comparing neighbors at the edges.

We see, that the marked 0 and 1 are neighbors. The 1 is missing one mine, and only has one unopened square (the red x) as a neighbor. So this must be a mine, and we flag it.

Now all those green marked 1's have one mine flaged as their neighbor, so we can uncover all their neighbors an get

Now we see, that there is a 1, which hase no flaged mines and only one unopened neighbor (marked with an x), so this has to be a mine, and we flag it.

Then the green marked 1 has one flaged mine as a neighbor, so we uncover its neighbors.

And we have another 1 that is still missing a mine, so we flag the only remaining neighbor that is unopened

And we can again uncover the neighbors of the 1 highlighted.

Here the highlighted 2 is missing one mine and has one unopened neighbor, so we flag it as a mine.

And the ones marked in green have one flaged neighbors, so we can uncover their neighbors.

And the marked 2 has two flaged neighbors, so we can uncover its neighbors also.

This marked 2 on the other hand is still missing one mine, so the x must be a mine, and we flag it.

And this marked 2 already has two flaged neighbors, so we can uncover its neighbors. The same is true for the 3's close to it, and we uncover their neighbors too.

And as a result, all squares are opend, and we have won!

@havenxz excellent advice, i think i've cracked it after a few mins of 1 then 2 mines. i'm gona keep working up from there

My best advice for someone who has no clue how to approach this: start your first games with only ONE mine and play around like that for a while to get an intuition for the relationship between positions. Then when you're confident with that, move up to 2 mines and get used to the patterns. The Delta (triangle) is also helpful to have on.

I recommend the Delta setting (triangle thing), as it reduces the numbers surrounding bombs once you flag them. Still a helpful guide though!

toggling that triangle thing on makes it so much more easier to comprehend

Game is so hard to understand because the game compacts four different spacial dimensions into 2. I'll grasp it eventually.
