Finding your save files.
Looking for the save directory.

Your save files can easily be found, copied and pasted to back them up. (For example, a USB device of some type.) If you want you can then transfer those files onto another PC with DASM Spell Quest installed and continue your game. When completed you can back up those files once again and transfer them back to the original source.

Cloud was another method of backing up your save files but sometimes depending on where you are not all locations have internet access. Since DASM Spell Quest can be played offline we decided it would be better to have a quick copy and paste method.

Where is the save directory?

Below we have an "Example Only" directory to where the save files are kept. Your hard drive directory may be different but in your STEAM folder it would still be; "...\Steam\steamapps\common\DASM Spell Quest\Binaries\Win32\UserCode" as default.

Example Directories Only
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\DASM Spell Quest\Binaries\Win32\UserCode
OR
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\DASM Spell Quest\Binaries\Win32\UserCode

Files to be copied over.
Specific files or even better whole folder to be copied over.
Below is an image of the save folder "UserCode". Depending on what type of text editing software you have on your PC some files may look a little different. Below are three files with a red square around them and a fourth file which is a text document file. They are called:
  • UltimateSaveSystem.exp
  • UltimateSaveSystem.lib
  • UltimateSaveSystem.dll
  • DO_NOT_DELETE.txt
These 4 files do not have to be copied over but if you accidentally do it won't matter. You can even copy the whole UserCode folder if you wish and just paste it over the top of another if your transferring your game to a different PC.
*NOTE* Do not delete these 4 files. If you do delete them the save files will no longer work!
STEAM Directory: "\Steam\steamapps\common\DASM Spell Quest\Binaries\Win32\UserCode"

The SAV files are the files that have data on them such as maps played, tokens collected, settings and other various stats. All of these must be copied over if you wish to continue a game. If you forget to add a file it may affect the game you are going to play so make sure you have got them all.

That is why it may be a best practice to completely copy the "UserCode" folder over with all the files within it.

Teachers and Tutors
Teachers or Tutors
If you are using DASM Spell Quest for lessons, especially at a school you can create a folder with the students name on it and copy the "UserCode" folder in each individual folder. This will allow you to save multiple copies of the save files for each individual student. Though, keep in mind you will have to delete any previous save files that will still remain in the UserCode folder where DASM Spell Quest is installed.

If you are going to use this method of backing up files make sure that the files; UltimateSaveSystem.exp, UltimateSaveSystem.lib and UltimateSaveSystem.dll are all within the UserCode folder. Also after each student has finished it would be a good idea to delete the UserCode folder within the DASM Spell Quest install to make sure that no files have been left behind.

If you are going to use this method it would be best to have a generic UserCode folder that you can paste back into the game directory that has no save files in it at all except for the four main files that are needed. Below are a few more examples of how you can set up a fresh DASM Spell Quest game, especially for new users.

New Students/Users.

A new student has started using this software and you want them to have a fresh clean account.
How do you do this? (Make sure that you have backed up your save files first if you wish to keep them!)

Option 1
  • Select "LOAD".
  • Then select "DELETE GAME".
  • You will be asked if you are sure so select "YES".
After or during exiting the save screen you may still see a "ghost Image" of your saved file but I can assure you it is actually gone. We added a ghost image so you could still view what the last map that was played before starting a new game.

Option 2
If you have a new student and you want them to start from the very beginning all you have to do is manually delete all of the SAV files only. Below shows what files cannot be deleted indicated by a red box. The files that have no red box can be deleted. All the files that are to be deleted are SAV files.
The default STEAM Directory is: "\Steam\steamapps\common\DASM Spell Quest\Binaries\Win32\UserCode"

*HINT if you have to delete a UserCode folder and you’re not sure whose it is just make a back up of it just in case before deleting it!
Creating a generic folder for different users, especially new!
Creating a generic folder for DASM Spell Quest

Sometimes to save a lot of problems it would be a really good idea to create a generic save folder.

You can create this folder by locating the directory to where the UserCode folder is: The default STEAM Directory is: "\Steam\steamapps\common\DASM Spell Quest\Binaries\Win32\UserCode"

Once the folder is located, simply copy and paste the UserCode folder onto a USB or storage device of some type and add it to a folder called "Generic Copy".
This generic folder can then be simply pasted where the original folder was and a new user can start again.
Each time a new student or user is going to use DASM Spell Quest, simply delete the UserCode folder completely. ( Making sure you made a copy or back up of it first!) Once done replace it with your generic one.

It is vital though that your generic "UserCode" folder has these files and no SAV files:
  • UltimateSaveSystem.exp
  • UltimateSaveSystem.lib
  • UltimateSaveSystem.dll
  • DO_NOT_DELETE.txt
Remember: Once the student or user is finished, create a folder with their name and back it up. Once done, delete the folder in the DASM Spell Quest game directory and add the generic folder back in its place.
The default STEAM Directory is: "\Steam\steamapps\common\DASM Spell Quest\Binaries\Win32\UserCode"
Backing up your save files.
Finding and backing up your save files.

This section of the guide only explains how to back up your UserCode folder which has all your save files. (SAV files.)

STEP ONE:
Locate your World of DASM Install Directory.
(Example Only) The default directory is: "{Drive letter}\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\DASM Spell Quest"

STEP TWO:
Locate the folder UserCode in this directory:
"\DASM Spell Quest\Binaries\Win32\UserCode"

STEP THREE:
Right Click the folder "UserCode" and select "Copy"

STEP FOUR:
Right Click and "Paste" the folder UserCode on your USB drive/Hard drive or storage device of some type.

You are finished and your save files have now been backed up.
There is a chance you might want to do multiple saves over time. You could always just copy over the top of this folder if you want each time but you can always rename the UserCode folder and add a date to it. for example; UserCode 12/12/17 or UserCode 02/03/18 etc.
With this method you can at least see the date on each save without having to look at the folders properties.
This guide seems a little repetitive?
Why is this guide so repetitive?

We try to make things as basic as possible so users can understand exactly what we are trying to say. There are still a lot of people who are not what we call "Tech Savvy" and they need guides which are step by step.
There was a time where some people did not even know where to turn a computer on or how to use a mouse let alone think it was a simple rodent that lived in a hole in a wall.

So if we seem a little basic in most of our guides, this is the reason why.

Enjoy!
