Risen 2 - How not to bounce off the game after 15 minutes!
By Lukas Alexander
Risen 2 is really enjoyable and absorbing game when you're playing it in "proper way".

A lot of players (including me) was disgusted by not-intuitive (comparing to first Risen) combat system from very first minutes of game. There is some ways to make game more interesting and fun-serving as long as we won't develop our character enough.

First thing: Buy shotgun from guy near sugar cane field. Yes, it's really useful weapon. It shot's every 2 seconds and gives 60 damage. Boars and monkeys won't be pain in the ass anymore. You can kill with it absolutely anything in Ticaragua island- including Jaguars and Ghouls which will be out of your range in this stage of game. The most important thing is to develop proper tactic- this time the most suitable is simple "hit and run". Fire, retreat, fire again and retreat once more. Repeat for effect.
If enemy has only few HP you can switch weapons and hit him with swords. It's useful to learn "Strong hit" ability. You'll deal a lot more damage.

Second thing: It's a lot easier to explore island with Patty in your team. He can absrob a lot of damage from beasts, focuss their attention and at last- gave them quite a beating. Explore island without haste. If you're not sure about your abilities- don't go to reach pirate town in the north. Patty will meet Steelbeard and stay with him- you'll be alone for some time. I've made it wrong way- reached pirate settlement quite early and had to kill all those beasts remaining with my firearms.

Third: If you'll reach pirate settlement learn thief abilities like opening locks and pickpocketing. It's extremely useful and in farther parts of game when you'll get plenty of loot thanks to those. There is a lot of closed chests in the world- most of them gave you things such as goblets, gold nuggets or grog/rum etc. Some of them will give you plans of legendary weapons or special items boosting your stats and staying out of inventory in something like "cloud collection".

Fourth: Look for hidden treasures when you'll get proper quests. Try to obtain every treasure map you'll see. It's very valuable stashes hidden in some places on island. Especially at the beginning you'll get a lot of money for trainers and traders when you'll sold things found in those chests.

Fifth (Optional): This one bases on your own preference. Some people learning crafting and dirty tricks. As far as I see from my experience there is no point of learn crafting except smithing. When you'll get this you'll be able to reforge legendary weapon parts to really strong pieces of arms. I've made it at the end of Antigua and I think it was worth. I plundered almost everything what was able to plunder and some pieces of legendaries was in my backpack. Now I don't need to look after weapons.

Dirty tricks are different thing. They give you some advantages during fights. Sand or salt in the eyes and your enemy is blind for second or two. Extremely useful is KICK ability. You'll be able to throw away your enemies, hit them and throw away again. Repeat for effect.

Make screenshot of map of island you're currently playing and open paint. Mark closed chests, too strong enemies or other things you think you should remember. In you're current state you won't be able to open certaing chests, kill some creatures or reach some places because lack of key. After 6 hours you'll probably forget about those things because there is a lot of things to do in Risen 2 world.
I'm also marking areas where I've been to make sure any monster survived and any possible stash was found.

At the end. There is no ONE-GOOD Way to play Risen 2. This time I've made it and didn't uninstalled game after reaching first island. Fights were painful, I suffered lack of money and I wasn't able to leveling my character because lack of experience granted after killing animals. Then I've found shotgun, changed tactic a bit and I'm enjoying game even as good as first Risen.

Hope you'll find something helpful in this guide. Write comment if don't agree or have other point of view.

You should go to pirate right away just stay away from the ship and you keep patty. Once you go back to Sac. able to free Largo then you can move thru the island in good shape..Like you Said get the shotgun , it does make a big difference

Well I personally had no trouble with monkies, jaguars, or the cavern dwellers during that stage of the game. You making the assumption that its not possible that early in the game without a shotgun is just untrue and rather silly. I stopped reading there.

I'm really happy that you found my work useful and even tried to write something from yourself.

to give an idea of timings - you initiate your 2nd strike when the 1st one's landing, the kick when the 2nd one is landing, start holding S to move back right once you pressed the kick button and initiate your first strike right when the enemy's air-bitting attack's animation is about to come to an end(even before it stops, it's safe).

important- 1) holding RMB by the end of your 2nd strike - more or less protects you from being cought with a sucker punch the human-like bots use left and right 2) while holding it non stop feels like a trigger for them to go berserk to break your guard. 3) once you start winning and they have only a few HP left or sometimes earlier or, randomly, any time- human -like bots might start another attack right between your two strikes, but that seems to be only provoked by slight changes in the described routine in distance or timing - just switch to the one strike mode instead of two strikes, doing all the rest as normal, it's nearly safe. And go back to two strikes once you feel you forced them back into the routine.

sea devils -just work on them with incessant chained strikes, focusing on the most insolent one making sure they keep being pushed away from a chance to get right near you. It also does good to change your position with a roll when ever you see you could get more than one infront of you to beat more than one at once.
Guardian or gargoile - hit once from the max distance as soon as it is within reach and be ready to evade rolling back, best only take them on after you got the strong hit. Shooting the pistol as soon as it enters your aim lock distance and rolling back (once) right away works ok too. Lingering within the contact distance not recommended.

Ghouls and bets - best just proceed with them once you've acquired the strong hit ability, it's only 4 to 6 rightly timed strong strikes then, with a single roll back after each.
Otherwise - method one, often demanding one strike instead of two and with a big chance for things to go wrong.
Grave spider - once you know your reach and are able to strike exactly when it gets within it - it hides it head after you land a couple of blows - that's when you roll back once and wait for it to approach for more, a well looping tedious process. Watch out for it to not get stuck on the rocks and make you approach it, that's more dangerous and may end up with it "breaking the rules" and striking you once think it's your turn.

Jaguar - avoid any frontal contact, roll aside every time it gets close up front attacking, and shoot the pistol right away you rolled. There'll be enough moments when it's still close enough and not out off your aim lock. Turn on it every time after you rolled aside. And feel free to hack it all you want when you see it running in an arc around you, it won't strike back while doing so. And let it go or get ready to evade again if it moves otherwise Pretty same with monkeys, so you can practice on them(although wirh a bigger chance to get hit in the back by a monkey while rolling aside).

That more or less prevents bots from shooting pistols or throwing spears. Won't work on Blake and other bots not meant for beating. Now against a Sunken one - use method #1 or(better) just roll aside(!)once(!) when it strikes(what ever strike it is), that gives a moment to safely hit it once. Combine this and method#1 to skip any less controllable patterns when you're not sure you can pull off smth good to you and bad to it.
Timings are mean in the game, but some could be mastered, easiest of this based tricks is rolling forward behind the enemy's back when it attacks with that flurry Try it some time, might give you a chance to safely stab it in the back 5 or 6 times.

Beating a swordsman who will use his pistol (like a pirate guarding the big gate eg, works nice with the local savage warriors too): keep as close to it as you can, holding your RMB(blocking all its strikes, you can quickly release and get it held again between his strikes but it could take some time to tune to) and slowly circling around the enemy. To the left feels like a more productive direction to me. Everytime he misses because you got off the line of its attack - hit once or twice(when you get used to it), keep circling. Best of the pirates strikes to do it is the flurry(3 element move, can't miss it). If it managed to kick you off itself- roll back ASAP and proceed as described.
