Game crashes on startup - steam validation no effect

Game was working perfectly up until I dual booted Windows 8 x64 Professional with Kubuntu 12.10.
After I had installed Kubuntu using the Wubi installer, the game would no longer launch. The relic updater would launch, then shortly followed the BugSplat Crash reporting Send Utility.

This was displayed in the event viewer : -

The description for Event ID 1 from source BugSplat cannot be found.

The "fix" was to uninstall kubuntu. I had tried validating the local files, half the time it would pass without the problem, the other half it would sporadically repair upto 97% then start again. In the end I copied a working install of the game off another computer onto the affected machine. This also had no effect.

I can only assume the Virtual DIsk created by the Wubi installer conflicts with some kind of copyright protection used in CoH Tales of Valour.

Play the version simply called "Company of Heroes" (IT USES STEAM SERVERS AND STILL HAS WORKING MULTIPLAYER). Don't install the Legacy Edition or the Opposing Fronts/Tales of Valor standalone games (MULTIPLAYER DOES NOT WORK FOR THEM AS THE RELIC SERVERS ARE CLOSED), all expansions are included with the game simply called "Company of Heroes" (you can confirm this by going to the DLC menu for "Company of Heroes" in your library, you should see 3 entries, one for the core game and one each for Opposing Fronts and Tales of Valor). The Legacy Edition and standalone Opposing Fronts/Tales of Valor entries are outdated.
