DISCALIMER: This is my very first guide, hope it helps people out there!! Also it’s a very long guide to read, hope you don’t get too bored. Not too many pictures too.

This guide will guide basic/new players welcoming themselves into Brawlhalla.

From the very basics i.e. picking a weapon you are comfortable using during gameplay. Training with the legends specified with the weapon of choice and learning when to use the moves associated with each weapon.

Next, the brawlers will be taught the basics of ranked in Brawlhalla - competitive game mode and ranks.

Finally, fare welled into their gaming lives of Brawlhalla.

Basics
Alright, so you have started to play Brawlhalla but are stuck as to which weapon you should choose, as you are given the choice of 6 legends each week.

"Oh that character or legend looks sick",
"Oh that legend makes a good noise when initialised" ;)
"Damn she T H I C C"

These are the comments I hear new players saw choosing a legend to play with. They join a match and loose and just rage quit. The com back online and repeat the same method. You need to realise that some weapons are good, and some are not.

An example from a new player I heard was, "Why does bow, katars, cannon and scythe have a crappy recovery, while sword, spear, gauntlets and guns have a good recovery".

That is also another thing you must consider when choosing a legend. New players tend to just jump and do signature moves of the legend of choice - "Ohhh it's sick bro", "Damn, flames out of the mouth", "Wow, a bear comes out".

It's not bout signature moves, it's about putting knowledge into the game. I know you will be like thinking, "mate it's just a game, chill". But some people out there want to become good from the get go, and who wants to lose to a noob.

So, pick a legend which has an easy feel for the moves during gameplay. An example is a legend with sword, spear, hammer, gauntlets.

Yes gauntlets, "oh but they are so hard to learn, people do some crazy moves with them". So, they have more hours on the game then you.

Just pick a weapon and head to training mode. Found under offline tab in the main menu of Brawlhalla - for the time being (until unless the dev's change it again).

NOTE: All legends have weaknesses and strenghts, you can play any legend in the game and be successfulll, no character is better than others, you just have to use the legends' weaknesses and strengths well against your opponent.
During Training
So, you have selected a weapon of choice. You mash buttons to beat the other stationary bot on the other side of the map.

"Wow cool sigs bro", "damn l'm proud of myself for pulling that off, I don't think anyone can do that". I don't know if this player was being serious, but to me, sounds like a legit ****head.

Number 1 tip to all new players: DO NO RELY ON SIGNATURE MOVES OF THE LEGENDS. Think of signature moves as a SECONDARY OR LAST RESORT. Good players hardly rely on signature moves, rather just basic moves and accumulation of damage.

Anyways, if you realise, one can achieve a lot during training. Hitboxes of each weapon, startup, during the move and warm down. These are represented by different colors. To achieve this, press the b button on your keypad or the button associated to show names of players during gameplay. Then switch on the hitbox.

You can also turn on other options to learn other stuff. I'm not going into too much detail about that, maybe in later guides. However, if you would like to learn more, head to '"Berthen's guide - Tutorial."

Anyways, each weapon has different moves even though one presses the same keypad on the keyboard. An example is sword and hammer; pressing Slight would make the legend roll over and move a large distance while hammer it's a hit to the side and moves only a fraction.

I will not go into combos and what not, but learning each move of each weapon is important. As this will provide you information on their range, startup, delay and warm down. In doing so, during the gameplay you will be able to know what the other player will bring out as their move, depending on their health, distance from yourself, if they are on the ground or the air, do they even have a weapon in their hand.

Yes, you heard me right, not many people know this especially beginners, but one can fight unarmed as well. In addition, throw bombs, plant mines and throw spike balls.

I will not go into too much detail about these once again.

NOTE: No combos, string, throwing action is provided. Just basic information about the gameplay during training.

LEARNING HOW MANY JUMPS YOU HAVE LEFT

Alright, so you may have heard of a guide, "You can actually jump in this game", and yes he/she do get the importance point across, you can jump!! but in a silly manner.

So how may jumps do you think tihs game provideds you;
2...... 3......, 4.....?? Nope this game provides you a total of 5 jumps, YES 5 JUMPS!!. But in order to do so, you must learn how ot use dodging properly. One mashes the "W" button 3 times and one can notice during training the colour of their legend decreases to a higher contrast. This is becuase the game is advicing you, you have ran out of jumps which can only occur via the "W" button.

However, you are still not able to reach the map from three jumps while recoverying from a near knockout. You can press your signature move button!!!! YES, your signature move button, TOLD YOU IT WAS LAST RESORT. this is called a recovery and is best used to knock oppoenets out or recover youself :P

Alright, but now you see a weapon being tossed at you, and you know if this hits, you will be knocked out for sure. But you have a trick up your sleeve, you have the dodge button. Default it is the "SHIFT" button. However, you cannot just press this, you must have a certain finger on another keypad from the keyboard.

If you see a wepaon being tossed at you head on, you can either press W and SHIFT to dodge upwards, or if you know that you are very high up in air, you can choose to shift downwards by S and SHIFT, this also applies to side dodges, by pressing A or D and shift depedning on the positon of yourself on the map.

However, you have now ran out of jumps and you see another weapon being tossed. Biggest factor you must know in Brawlhalla, you are given 1 dodge, however, the dodge resets after 3.5 secods. Thus, if a wepaon is tossed ater 3.5 seconds, then you have another dodge ready, if not then GG.

But there is a trick to do even a better dodge, diagonal dodging. One can achieve this by pressing side button depedning on the positon of the map, "D-W-SHIFT". If you want to dodge diagoanlly downwards then jsut press S.

But hey, guess what you have a trump card, LOL TRUMP. cough* cough*, you can do a sair or a dair. this gives you just a single movement, maybe and just maybe you may be able to comeback from a near knockout and turn the tables 360 and knock you opponent out.

NOTE: You must look at your opponent's throwing, if it's a miss then do not waste your dodge, good players tend to wait on the edge and kill you from a gorund pound. However, I will not go into too much detail rather just observing your opponent and recovery and dodging in a specific order can save you from falling.

Controls
This is just a small section about your controls in Brawlhalla.

So, you've finished training, but you did not like the feels for the controls. The normal WASD controls made you feel like you want to play a AAA game - Call of Duty.

REMEMBER: Everyone initially begins with the exact control options i.e. default. If one control is changed then the default setting is changed.

In order to change controls in Brawlhalla, it all depends on your location of the game.
  • If you are on the main page then you need to click on the top right corner of a spanner i.e. OPTIONS. Then click controls.
  • Otherwise the second location one can be is during a game or in a queue. All you need to do is press escape on your keypad and click controls.

Once in the controls, you can decide to paly completely via your keyboard, controller or use a combination of keyboard and mouse.

My advice is to pick the keys on the keyboard which suits you best. An example is the jump option. I've heard people use either "W", "up" button, "spacebar" or the button "I".

In addition, I would recommend unticking pick up with quick attack. During gameplay, there are scenarios in game when u just want to attack but accidently pick up a weapon "**** me sideways, I did not mean to do that". You can avoid this by doing as stated above.

In addition, if you want to go advance, then you can press "X" and change the controls via advance mode. In this you can see each button associated with each move. An example is "AIM+JMP" or "JMP", I've heard people using the up button as aim and then throwing their weapon, meanwhile others just jump and throw.

"While pros don't need to use aim rather just throw it whenever - fully sick ****s, person in a lobby once."

My tip is to try to throw without jumping as this would waste your jumps during the gameplay. Especially when you are trying to recover form a knockout and you throw and you unintentionally waste a jump. - INSTA-DEATH!!!

Now all you must do is train with those specific controls and move onto the real gamemode associated in Brawlhalla.
Gamemodes
So, you think you have finished training are up to beat some other noobs out there.

There are 5 different game modes to choose from the main menu itself. Free for all good for beginners, as a lot of beginners are there. But a lot of spammers too, as they have poor knowledge about the game, are not interested in becoming good just play it to waste time or their family members are over so it's a good game for the kids.

It's a good way to test out what you have learnt during the training. Remember no combos or strings are taught. however, if you would like to learn head over to any YouTube channel; I recommend Berthen because he has good gameplay footage and knowledge about the game itself.

Next is Strikeout, where you choose three legends and try to win the game.

Next, it's friendly 2v2. This by far is the best game mode created by the developers and is new. It is a good foundation for players who want to hit that next stage of ranked and playing completely. In this game mode the rules are simple, three lives, 8 minutes and 2 teams of 2 members each. However, when compared to competitive 2v2, the team damage is off hence you cannot hurt your partner until unless you directly throw a bomb at them or plant a mine in which he/she steps upon.

My advice is to find someone from online, your mate from school, or a member of you clan with same skill set as you. Hence when you lose games, you will learn to realise each other's strengths and weaknesses. A lot of competitive 2v2 player have only 1-2 partners at most during which they reach diamond upon. This will be explained in the next section.

Also during this gameplay, try to avoid hitting your partner as much, even though you cannot physically hurt their character, avoiding them being hit provides you a good relationship between the game if you decide to head over to competitive once it's over.

Next, my favorite game mode, experimental. In this it's rules are directly coincidental to ranked 1v1. Each have 3 stock/lives, 8 minutes to knockout your opponent out of the map. However, the only difference is the developers create different rules, game styles, maps and other stuff that people may enjoy. Hence, they would like people to play a lot and provide feedback as to which update they provided in experimental should they carry out in the future.

Finally, the game mode that changes each week is the Brawl week. In this each week it's a different game mode that once can play with mates to earn gold. This is a really good way to spend time with friends if you do not want to play competitively.

REMEMBER: new players come in the game and rely on signature moves, as stated before. They win a couple of games and then loose the rest. This causes stress and causes them to leave the game.
Ranked
So, you've finally decided you want to play with big guns ;)

There are two ranked game modes. Ranked 1v1 and Ranked 2v2.

In 1v1 it's very basic you each have 3 lives/stock and are given 8 minutes to knock your opponent out of the map. Sound familiar yes very similar to experimental. In this gamemode, you will have to pick you best legend, hence the previous training and other game mode are important to learn.

REMEMBER: I will not be telling you how to play ranked rather what it's about.

In ranked 1v1, there are five tiers associated to the amount of Elo you have earnt.

  • Each player starts off with 750 Elo
    There are 5 banners that one can achieve in the game;
  • Tin
  • Bronze
  • Silver
  • Gold
  • Platinum &
  • Diamond

Once you win a game, depending on your opponent’s Elo, you will gain that certain amount of Elo. An example; if one had an Elo of 1300, and their opponent also had 1300, they would gain 20 Elo from them. If their opponent only had 1100, then they would gain only 2-5 Elo. If they had 1700+, then they would gain 40-50 Elo gain.

Remember, the game wants you to win, hence it will match you players with similar skillset. This is associated with your legend Elo. Can be seen on the bottom of the banner.

Once you win, you will hear a sound, either you gained a tier on your current ranking or you increased a rank; from gold to platinum.

But remember, you can also lose games as well. In doing so you will decrease Elo and lose you ranking.

Here are the thresholds for current rankings at the moment. Tier 0 only occurs in 1v1 and once you have reached the current rank threshold. This is known as the de-ranked threshold.

Diamond and Platinum
Diamond: 2000+
  • Platinum 5: 1936-1999
  • Platinum 4: 1872-1935
  • Platinum 3: 1808-1871
  • Platinum 2: 1744-1807
  • Platinum 1: 1680-1743 (Rank threshold)
  • Platinum 0: 1622-1679 (De-rank threshold)

Gold
  • Gold 5: 1622-1679
  • Gold 4: 1564-1621
  • Gold 3: 1506-1563
  • Gold 2: 1448-1505
  • Gold 1: 1390-1447 (Rank threshold)
  • Gold 0: 1338-1389 (De-rank threshold)

Silver
  • Silver 5: 1338-1389
  • Silver 4: 1286-1337
  • Silver 3: 1234-1285
  • Silver 2: 1182-1233
  • Silver 1: 1130-1181 (Rank threshold)
  • Silver 0: 1086-1129 (De-rank threshold)

Bronze
  • Bronze 5: 1086-1129
  • Bronze 4: 1042-1085
  • Bronze 3: 998-1041
  • Bronze 2: 954-997
  • Bronze 1: 910-953 (Rank threshold)
  • Bronze 0: 872-909 (De-rank threshold)

Tin
  • Tin 5: 872-909
  • Tin 4: 834-871
  • Tin 3: 796-833
  • Tin 2: 758-795
  • Tin 1: 720-757
  • Tin 0: 200-719

After an entire season of 1v1, approximately 3-4 months. One achieves glory depending on their wins, ranking and legend rating. The number of wins accumulate from 2v2 as well.

After the season reset one decreases in rank, due to the fun of repeating what one has achieved previously and go further up the leaderboards.

In 2v2, this the basically the same rules associated from the previous gamemode section about friendly 2v2. Except the team damage is switched on.

The same ranking criteria apply except for tier 0. A tier 0 in ranked 2v2 does not exist, you plummet straight to the previous rank, but this is only associated with the legends/individuals Elo not the team's Elo.
Conclusion
Alright, you have successfully completed this guide and hopefully, "your **** isn't stuck in a toaster", "failed to comply with these silly guide". I really hope it helps people beginning Brawlhalla. Now all you must do is rank your legends and game up to earn gold.

This will enable you to buy skins when festive updates come online in Brawlhalla.

In summary:
  • Remeber to NOT RELY on signature moves of the legend you will be playing with, tihnk of them as secondary/ last resort,
  • If you start loosing large number of games, then do not get stressed, rather leave and have a bit of rest. If you are really serisous about the game, then I suggest to review your gameplay. I will go through this in the next review.
  • If you are struggling then I suggest just head to training and make the bot hard, (do so by pressing b and clicking secodns tab. Then choosing the bot's difficulty from stand i.e. default to hard).

Finally, I quote - "It is nice to research and try to think about things that you can do to get better but barely anything beats experience. You will have to play a lot to use or learn how to use things."

Good luck and I will see you in the next guide.

really disagree with the some weapons are good and others are bad part. Im a diamond and honestly since patches are so frequent the only known very good weapons right now are scythe and gaunts. nobody really knows whats happening below that in terms of tiers. either way tier lists are meant for top players and are completely irrelevent to a player who is just starting. Its possible to hit high diamond with any weapon in the game and skill is more important than weapon tiers. the only time a weapon has ever been completely killed in my memory (ive been playing for like 2 years) was one season were you could nlight out of katar combos making katars completely dead though the change has since been reverted and katars are back in business.
