Max's Dark Alternate Character
By AdamTheFab
We briefly saw Max's alternate life when she decides to change the fate of William in 'Life is Strange: Episode 3 & 4. The game moves on quickly and most players miss the alternate Max we get in this sequence. The Max we get in this sequence (before we take control of her) is a much more sinister character.

Level Backstory - Episode 3 (end)

As we see in the short sequence (0:50-1:55 in the video), everything in Max's life when she altered the her past has changed. 'At some point in 2008, the original Max Caulfield possessed the alternate Maxine’s body on the day of William’s death. Hoping to spare the original Chloe Price the loss of her father, she prevented William from dying but hiding his keys and convincing him to take the bus to pick up Joyce, who had gone grocery shopping. Max’s actions created a divergence from timeline wherein Maxine’s life takes a slightly different path.'

When we take control of the character we see a brief glimpse (or sequence) of how Max's life has dramatically changed. She is a member of the Vortex Club and friends with its primary members. Because the circumstance of the original Timeline never came to pass, she does not possess the ability to manipulate time.

'With William’s survival, Chloe and Maxine remained close until Ryan and Vanessa moved to Seattle, presumably during the same year, 2008. Maxine lived in Seattle for five years. During that time, Maxine went on road trips and maintained a brief correspondence with Chloe. March 2013, William attempted to contact Maxine to let her know she could speak with Chloe

'but she did not respond.'

How is Max different?
Playing the game the first time, it seems like Max is just more popular. Her new found friends come as a surprise, but no backstory is specifically given. It's up to the player to find out how much Max changes in this alternate timeline.

In the official alternate timeline backstory (posted on Link[dontnodentertainment.wikia.com]) it suggests that Max's character is almost unchanged:

"The Maxine Caulfield of the alternate timeline appears to have retained most of the personality traits and quirks of the original Max Caulfield."

However, upon further investigation - this is largely up for debate. The only changed characteristic that they touched upon is that she is now part of the vortex club and has kept in touch with Chloe:

"Where the original Max fell out of touch with Chloe, Maxine wrote handwritten letters to Chloe and sent photographs of her road trips to her. Judging from the conversations the alternate Chloe had with Max, Maxine was never told about Chloe's car accident and labored under the belief that no harm had come to Chloe.

Where Maxine differs from the original Max, is her relationships with the students of Blackwell Academy. Where her original counterpart instinctively disliked the elitism and behavior of the Vortex Club members, Maxine gravitated toward them and became a member of their clique."

She seems to be a more typical 'popular' girl, but her close friendship with Nathan and Victoria have lead Max down a path she never intended.

As can be seen here in a text message to Nathan - Max has been using the dark room.

The dark room was developed by the Prescott for Mark Jefferson and Nathan. This means that Mark would still be in the picture in this timeline of events. This leads us to conclude that if he is the same character from the original timeline (or has the same intent), Max knows about the dark room and its secrets.

Also in this timeline, Max and Nathan are extremely close. The evidence we get from the way he talks to her and the closeness is that they are/have been together. This fuels the conspiracy fire even further - as they seem to be openly discussing the dark room and going on a date.

Is Max's alternate character one which she actively looked to avoid in the original timeline, or is this just her new, 'popular' self?

I hoped this theory include Max from Nightmare .

Oh. It’s fanart. Didn’t see the comments below. Well, it’s very convincing lol. The art looks straight out of the game.

I didn’t see that photo of Nathan and Max. Weird.

I will add disclaimers! Thanks for the suggestion :) it's all just speculation and theory, not conclusive.

Whilst not all dark rooms are the dark room, this does assume some things from the original timeline.

Of course with any fan theory there will be arguments for and against - this was just something I thought at the time of playing!

You need to add disclaimers to the things you fabricated instead of got from the game.

Also, there's only a single text from Max's dad to Max, which Max never replies to.

Also, you discount the card that Max's parents send Chloe, and there is no way that Max's parents would send a card to Chloe and not mention it to their daughter, not after how close Max and Chloe were. Remember that Chloe specifically refuses to let Max treat her as anything but normal.

Also, while ericanadian is correct that we never see Max use a camera other than a polaroid-style camera, with the variations between the original timeline and AU, it's actually possible that despite Max's claim that she didn't buy a camera (to her mom) that she actually did-- because the dark room comments are 10/2 and the mom conversation is 10/5. And Mom thought it was a lot of money to be spending at a camera store.

I'd also agree that the dark room is a generic photography room and not all dark rooms are The Dark Room.

it's more potentially than definitely :)

Interesting theory - This is just how I interpreted the events :tabbycat:

Did not notice the time stamps on the texts with Chloe and her dad. That is pretty depressing.

I suppose your theory is possible, but a dark room is a thing used for developing photos, and it doesn't necessarily mean it's THE dark room. I do acknowledge that there was no reference to a regular dark room at Blackwell, but given that Max was running with instant photos the whole time, it may just never have come up. There are a lot of rooms you never enter and an old and storied art academy would almost certainly have one.

My understanding was that Max effectively became Victoria in this version of events, which was reinforced when you literally become Victoria in the nightmare. Given that Victoria was similarly close with Nathan and had no clue about his... side work, I had assumed Max similarly had no idea about it.

It's fan art - I just used it to mock-up what it might have been like.

Interesting observations. I'm curious, where did you get the pictures of Max with Nathan?
