GENERAL
Warning - if you don't want any slight part of the game spoiled for you, do not read past this point.

This guide will help you with finding the secret stars that are needed to progress throughout the last world. You will need all twelve to pass through the entire game, but only six to get to the first few of the last levels. The stars in Alternate mode are pretty much in the same locations, with some added twists.

If you want to find all of the stars yourself, but do not know where to start looking, there are some general tips you can adhere to. The levels that contain stars will have special star markers in the top right corner on the level select screens. These stars will be black if you haven't gotten them yet, and white if you've already collected them.

Note the star in the upper right corner - this is what you should look for.

After you've chosen a level, you might want to know how to find the actual stars. We'll go into detail on that subject in a bit, but first some general information on how the star locations look.

Notice that part of the wall that is suddenly flat and has got small diagonal slopings to it? In the bottom right of the screenshot? That is a star location entrance - almost all of them look like that. If you see one of those, it is probably a star location entrance. They may look like walls, but they're actually non-solid entrances! Just roll on in there and claim your reward.

The rest of the sections will contain specific info on where the stars are.
HARARA MOUNTAINS
This section details how to find the two stars located in Harara Mountains.

STAR 1 - World 2-3
This star is located in the very beginning of the game. In the level 2-3, where you learn to roll over ceilings. On the third screen, there is a part where you are supposed to roll up a great slope and then continue to the right. Instead, roll into the star entrance seen on the left side of the picture.

STAR 2 - World 2-5

The second star of Harara Mountains is located to the left on the very first screen in 2-5. In order to get there, roll over to the next screen and hold S while you're going back to the left. This will make you ramp off a small hill and land right next to the secret exit. After that, hold A and roll to the star.
SKYMNING
This section details how to find the two stars located in Skymning.

STAR 3 - World 3-4

In order to find this star, go about the level normally until after the part where you are hurled up by a boulder. Instead of winging it to the right, knocking over some boxes and finishing, hold A and slowly drop on to the small platform below where you entered. Roll to the left and fall down the entrance.

STAR 4 - World 3-7

This is kind of a tough one. Roll through the first screen until the end, but stop at the slope at the very bottom right. Go slowly to the bottom, and build up speed with S to get on top of the plank on the next screen. After this, just roll into the secret exit to the right. This is slightly harder in Alternate mode, where some clever maneuvering from the right is needed.
OLD RUINS
This section details how to find the star located in the Old Ruins.

STAR 5 - World 4-1

The only star in the Old Ruins is found on the very first level. Starting from the beginning, roll to the next screen and fall down. From there, roll to the left back into the first screen and into the secret exit.
PERPETUUM FACTORY
This section details how to find the two stars located in the Perpetuum Factory.

STAR 6 - World 5-9
In 5-9, continue to the third screen. Roll as far right as you can go, then hold S and roll up the little ramp located there. This should send you going up a small tunnel. In the middle of this tunnel, switch directions to holding right (while still holding S) and fling yourself up onto the platform shown in the screenshot. When you're there, roll where the arrow in the screenshot is pointing as fast as you can and you should reach the secret exit.

STAR 7 - World 5-11
This one can be quite hard. On the second screen, seesaw up and down a few times, and when you've got a good height, roll up onto the platform in the top right of the screen. This brings you to a small part of the next screen, where all you have to do is make sure not to fall down into the small hole and roll into the star exit to the right.
RANNA CAVERNS
This section details how to find the star located in Ranna Caverns.

STAR 8 - World 6-10
This star is located on the very first screen. Roll to the very right, and then ramp off the seesaw you last crossed - this time going to the left. This should get you to a small alcove where the star exit is to the left.
MURKY DEPTHS
This section details how to find the star located in the Murky Depths.

STAR 9 - World 8-3
This is one of the few stars without an obvious entrance! Keep going normally until you get to the third screen. Roll down into the first tree, then roll to the left instead of continuing. Roll back into the previous screen and drop down to the platform with a circular bird on it. Keep going left into the tree and you will get the star.
GIANT LEAF
This section details how to find the two stars located in Giant Leaf.

STAR 10 - World 9-4
The 10th star might take a while to get, but there isn't much risk involved. On the second screen, there is a plank connecting two platforms. Go to the right of it and repeatedly knock it to the left until it falls down. When it has, roll down there and into the bottom right secret exit.

STAR 11 - World 9-12
For this star, follow the beaten path with the wheel and platform until the end. Get ready with the right arrow key, and when it stops, roll up into the small alcove containing the secret exit.
AURORA'S NORTH
This section details how to find the star located in Aurora's North.

STAR 12 - World 10-3
Star number 12 is quite probably the hardest one in the game, and with good reason. Roll to the right and race the ball to the end as you would normally do. After doing this, instead of continuing to the right, knock down the large boulder and drop down to where the small ball is. Start pushing the smaller ball to the left - but not too hard! If you've done this correctly, it should rest in a small crevice and you should be able to roll to the left in order to bounce up to where the final star is.
END
These twelve stars are the secrets existing in the game, and they are needed in order to progress throughout the final area.
