Stability-san here to talk about myself. Let's go over the basics:
1) Stability ranges from -3 to +3 (6 points total)
2) 0 Stability gives no bad modifiers, but no good ones either.
3) Positive Stability is good 95% of the time because it gives bonuses (more taxes, -1 to -3 revolt risk, etc)
4) Negative Stability is not good because it gives negative modifiers (less taxes, +1 to +3 revolt, also with -3 stability can't declare war, change national ideas, gov types, etc.)
5) Comets are bad
6) Don't look at the sky
7) STOP LOOKING AT THE SKY

So with that, what am I, Stablity-san, good for besides some kinky bonus tax, production and other money? I can help you change your country, though not always for the better.
You'll need stability to change your government type. The amount of stability you need to change from one government to another varies. For example a change from a feudal monarchy to administrative monarchy is not much stability, costing like 2 or so. But a monarchy to a theocracy is a bit more at 3 or 4.

You need more stability? Some random events give stability or make you lose it (just ignore the peasant rabble at this point), but when you have low stability keep this in mind:
1) investing excess ducats into your Stability Slider will move you closer to the next point of stability
2) hiring an artist will give you ducats in the Stability slider per month (which moves you closer to a higher stability)
3) Building churches, spy agencies and such reduces the TOTAL stability cost (for the next point)

Conclusion because I don't want to go on:
1) Stability has a number of uses, and gives some nice bonuses (thumbs up)
2) You probably want high stability, especially when you go to war for no reason (-2 stability)
3) Comets? The end is nigh!

Provinces can be renamed to anything as long as there isn't a province with the same name.
For example, I tried to make a "Hawaii" in Japan, but it didn't work. I settled for some good old 2hu and Pearl Harbors though. I think there's an event in some countries (byzantine for example) that auto renames some provinces, but most countries don't have that.

To chance prov names, click the name, backspace and type in your own prov name. Simple really.

The lore is history up until the moment you start playing. Read some history books if you want to be caught up. Start from the beginning and go to 1399.
