Defense Against Planes
By onewhosaysgoose
This guide will help you to not lose your precious battleships to aircraft carriers before you get the chance to do anything.

Prepare your un-rotated projectile launchers.

Tight Formations
Sailing your ships close together will allow them to mutually cover each other, and greatly increases their chances of shooting down planes. Don't worry about the lost maneuvering options; only DDs can dodge air-droped torpedoes in this game, and they can do it 100% of the time by going rull reverse and turning full in or away.
Destroyer Pickets
If you want to guard a cruiser or battleship from Torpedo attacks, use 2 destroyers to force the planes to take a very long aproach. If you place them to the side of your important ship, about 1 or 2 kilometers away, then those darn swordfish will spend 30 seconds in AA coverage before jamming your rudder.
Throw Everything Your Have At The CV!!!!!!
BANZAIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

Rush at the carrier, and prioritize killing them first. They are have the best killing power of any ship class, and will be killing your favorite ship on turn 3.

Shoot HE shells for better damage.
If you set the carrier on fire it won't be able to launch planes until the fire is out.
The damage report will tell you if "aircraft" is damaged; if it is red, it won't be able to launch any new planes.

An aircraft carrier will continue to call airstrikes until it is destroyer or it runs out of active planes, (4 for escort carriers, 8 for big carriers), SO SHOW NO MERCY.

Acceptance
Planes are still very good at killing everything.

Try not to cri
cri anyway

Land based aircraft can disable and sink you before you even get to take a turn.

Consider watching them get obliterated to push away the darkness creeping in...

Is there a more modern version of this excellent naval simulation? Perhaps centred on Pacific engagements/campaigns?

In the 'Battle of the Atlantic" mode, for an interesting scenario, try either (as GB) selecting only submarines, or (as Germany), only surface ships. Your choice will force the AI of the program to alter the various engagements it sets up, and makes for some fascinating (if historically unlikely) engagements

There is CAP in this game. But good luck getting it airborne before land based aircraft hit you hard. By the time you get CAP up the enemy has usually used up their land based aircraft.

And since only one side has aircraft carriers in the Atlantic (historically accurate), although CAP exists, there is really no point putting it up, since there are no carrier vs carrier battles.

If only CAP existed in this game...
Wait wouldn't that be OP

"Only DDs can dodge airborne torps" is innaccurate, ESPECIALLY against AI. I have dodged many torpedoes with battleships via a combination of dropping speed and changing course. Even if the torp hits, it hits the bow and does relatively little damage. Note that consecqutive torp drops will decrease the efficiency of this method, as you will eventually lose so much speed that the bomber doesn't have to lead his torp drop.

@w.walters21911 In "Battle of the Atlantic" mode you select one of your zones that has a shipyard, click the crane icon near the bottom left. This takes you to repair screen, where you can send ships to repair/rearm in that shipyard. Above the right list (of all repairing ships) is a display of the number of ships you have, out of the maximum 30. Clicking the arrow in that display will bring you a menu where you can browse all available ships. Click build to have the new ship instantly ready for action.

You can't build ships if it would put your fleet size over 30. You can decommission ships to make room for new ones on the repair/rearm screen.
