Park Soo-young was born in Jeju Island, South Korea. As a child, Joy was interested in modern trot music. In grade school, she was influenced to become a singer after receiving praise for her rendition of K-rock band Cherry Filter's song Flying Duck. She auditioned and was cast by S.M. Entertainment at the S.M. Global Audition in Seoul in 2012. She trained under the agency for two years, during which time a vocal coach gave her the stage name "Joy".
Joy was formally introduced as the fourth member of Red Velvet on July 29, 2014. She is the only member of the group who was not introduced as a part of SM Rookies before the group's debut. The group made their music debut with the digital single "Happiness" on August 1, 2014.
In 2015, Joy joined the fourth season of reality show We Got Married, where she appeared opposite BtoB member Yook Sung-jae. She received significant recognition for her participation in the popular TV program and featured in her first solo pictorial in Korean fashion magazine CéCi, concurrent to modeling for Etude House cosmetics. On December 29, 2015, Joy shared a win with Yook for the Best Couple Award and separately won the New Star Award at the 2015 MBC Entertainment Awards.
Following group promotions for Red Velvet's second mini album The Velvet, Joy released a duet with Yook on April 16, 2016 entitled "Young Love". The song peaked at #52 on the Gaon Singles Chart. Departing from We Got Married on May 7, they became known as one of the longest-running and most popular couples in the show's recent history. Over the course of We Got Married airing, their videos together on YouTube accumulated over 21.3 million views.
In mid 2016, S.M. Entertainment issued an official photo series for Joy, released once a week via Vyrl mobile applications and SM Town Now. It is entitled Enjoy your Monday with Joy. Joy collaborated with Lim Seul-ong in a duet titled "Always In My Heart", a project song under S.M. Entertainment's SM Station released on November 4, 2016. The song peaked at #2 on Soribada, Genie and Bugs streaming charts and #10 on Gaon.
Joy made her acting debut in tvN's music drama The Liar and His Lover (2017) alongside Lee Hyun-woo. It is the Korean television adaptation of Kotomi Aoki's popular manga Kanojo wa Uso o Aishisugiteru. She featured in several OST releases for the drama including Yeowooya, I'm Okay, Your Days, Shiny Boy, Waiting For You, and The Way To Me.

The discography of the South Korean girl group Red Velvet consists of one studio album, five extended plays, and twelve singles. Red Velvet was formed by the Korean entertainment company S.M. Entertainment in 2014, and consists of five members.

The group's first major release, the EP Ice Cream Cake, was released on March 17, 2015. The album topped the Korean music charts on its release. The group followed with their first full-length album, The Red, released on September 9, 2015, along with the title track "Dumb Dumb". The album topped various music charts, including the Billboard World Albums Charts, while "Dumb Dumb" became their first single to surpass a million downloads. Following The Red, they released their second EP, The Velvet, on March 17, 2016, which showed a more mature, R&B-influenced musical style. The group's third EP, Russian Roulette, was released on September 7, 2016, along with the title track of the same name. Their fourth EP, Rookie, was released on February 1, 2017, and their fifth EP The Red Summer was released on July 9, 2017.
