Gundemonium Recollection is a side-scrolling bullet hell shoot-em-up, which means lots and lots of bullets on-screen. Your character has a correspondingly small hitbox to allow you to dodge the bullets. The hitbox is located over the chest, and will be visible as a heart icon should you die.

Most enemies do not damage you even if you fly over them, so all you have to worry about are the bullets.

Phase Level
Phase Level provides dynamic difficulty in Gundemonium. The higher your current phase level, the more difficult the game will become, but scoring will be higher. Phase Level increases if you overheat your Guns as Eryth, kill a boss or attain Friction Break, and lowers when you bomb or obtain an extra life.

The maximum phase level for each difficulty is as follows:

Novice - 2
Revised - 5
Unlimited - As high as you can get it
Demonic - Fixed on 11

Bombs
Bombs clear the screen and give temporary invincibility. To counter-bomb, hit the bomb button as soon as you are hit. Extra bombs may be dropped by some enemies.

On Novice mode, auto-bombing is enabled, meaning a bomb is automatically used when you are hit.

Combo
Rapidly destroying enemies increases your combo, and not hitting anything for a while resets the counter. Pretty basic.

Friction
By placing your hitbox close to a bullet, you gain friction. Friction Break occurs when you obtain a certain amount of friction. This cancels all bullets onscreen into gems, and increases phase level.

Onslaught Bonus
Quickly kill a lot of enemies to obtain an onslaught bonus. Pretty basic.

Demonic Shift
By pressing both Mana (X) and Bomb (C), you will enter Demonic Shift, which basically fixes your phase level at 11 for as long as you have mana.
Characters
Eryth Millfall
Eryth's weapon is the Twin Shot. Tapping the fire button (Z) repeatedly will give a fast shot, while holding down the button will result in a slower shot and slower movement. Be careful when tapping the fire button, though, as you can overheat Eryth's guns and they will be unusable for a time.

Her mana ability, Fortune Wheel, throws a wheel projectile that will cause planeshift (i.e. slows down time) as long as it is hitting something.

Her bomb, 7-Way, is a powerful 7-way shot with high firepower and range.

The Earl Types
The Earl Types are a set of customisable characters. You can mix and match any of the following shot-types, mana abilities and bombs.

Shot Types
  • Star Fire - A standard 5-way shot. The center shot is the most powerful. Power increases during planeshift.
  • Twin Drill - A twin shot that changes angle when you move. Penetrates enemies. Incredible firing rate, arguably the best Earl-type shot.
  • Lucky Day - A laser shot. Firepower is pretty bad.
  • Photon - Fires single shots at a time. Highest firepower, but only one bullet onscreen at any one time. Planeshift activates when bullets hit something.
Mana Abilities
  • Daath Whisper - Activates planeshift, no other effects.
  • Derringer - Summons a mini Earl that stays in place and fires a stream of bullets. Planeshift activates as long as they're hitting something.
  • Rising Sword - Fires a huge laser for as long as you're holding down the mana button. High mana consumption rate.
  • Hell Spike - A powerful spike is launched at the enemy.
Bombs
  • Blood Rain - Crimson-coloured bullets rain from the sky. Hits screen-wide.
  • Overdrive - Increases the firepower of your shot for a period of time.
  • Shooting Star - Summons a dragon to chase down enemies. Basically a tracking laser attack.
  • Rozenkreuz - A wave of star bullets fire forward. Their direction changes depending on your movement.
Elixirel Chrome Matrix Proxy
The secret unlockable character. Elixirel's weapon is the Babel Range, a powerful 5-way shot.

Her mana ability is Daath Whisper, which, as mentioned above, activates planeshift. While in planeshift mode, Elixirel's shot gains piercing properities.

Elixirel has a different way of bombing. Instead of bomb items, she has a bomb gauge that slowly regenerates. As soon as the gauge is full, she can use her bomb, Gundemonium, which is a screen-filling attack. She can use Gundemonium as a counterbomb if the meter is past the notch on the bar. Collecting bomb items instantly refills her bomb gauge.

To unlock Elixirel, complete 24 play orders or defeat Elixirel Daath in the main game.
Secrets
True Ending
To obtain the true ending, you have to complete the game without using a continue. If the requirements are met, you should see the word 'Transmigratize' appear over the bomb gauge. Quickly press the bomb button (X) to obtain the true ending.

True Final Boss
To reach the true final boss, Elixirel Daath, you need to be at phase level 11 (exactly 11) and have an ability score of at least 100. Ability is affected by the following:
  • Every 2 bombs used (-1)
  • Getting hit (-1)
  • Onslaught bonus (+1)
  • Defeating a named enemy (+1)
  • Every 100000 points earned (+1)
  • Bonus based on current phase level in relation to maximum phase level, multiplied by levels played.
Performing the Transmigration with these criteria fufilled will enable you to fight Elixirel Daath. Note that her difficulty is not affected by phase level.

Matrix Orders
To unlock Matrix Orders mode, you need to reach Elixirel Kaether in Demonic Challenge mode. To reach Elixirel Kaether, the following challenges must be completed:
  • One of Chantal's forms
  • Lumière or Etoile Filante
  • Any of Phaser's forms
  • Any of Ereshkigal's forms
  • A number of Elixirel's other forms
Ain Soph Aur
To unlock Ain Soph Aur mode, defeat all the Matrix Masters.

Ain Soph Aur mode generates a level with random sections of the game, with a random mini-boss at the end of each zone. Note that Time Up will result in Game Over.

Misc. Tips and Tricks

Defeating Sapphire Master
If you're having problems with Alice and her impossible-to-dodge wave of bullets, you're supposed to friction break it. There are sufficient bullets in the wave to provide enough friction.

Defeating Jet Master
Tomoe will constantly revive as long as the Onyx gem on the screen is still there. Destroy all the circles on it first before attacking Tomoe.

Defeating Pearl Master
To damage Mio, destroy all her cards, and watch out for the suicide bullets they release. To damage Argenteum Astrum, use your Mana ability. If you happen to be playing as Elixirel or an Earl Type with Daath Whisper, you'll get a Photon-type weapon instead. It will still be necessary to use your Mana ability to slow down the pearls around her, though.

Thanks for the information. The guide has now been updated.

As details are light this could be a basic entry-level guide for the completely uninformed player, though details like Matrix Orders strategies aren't too suitable for that purpose.

On first read I noted the following errors:

- Elixirel can also fire the Babel Range (her "5-way shot") by holding the Rapid button down.
- The notch on Elixirel's bomb gauge is to be able to counter-bomb (the gauge must be full to bomb).
- The word across the bomb gauge for the true ending is "Transmigratize". It does not require a bomb.
- A couple of the Demonic Challenge boss names (Lumière, Ereshkigal).
- The Pearl Masters' name; Ars Arcanum should be Argenteum Astrum.

The writer has yet to unlock Elixirel or anything in the Secrets section. I expect they reworded a guide from shmups.system11.org [August 2007] as the topics and subtopics are identical (if reordered) and the rephrased wording has many perfectly-matching details including all errors listed above and calling combo "Chain".
