Introduction
Miasmata's cartography system can be a little confusing (and even daunting) at first, so this guide aims to demystify the process. The video tutorial below goes over the main steps and provides a real-time demonstration whilst the text beneath it covers the same points in considerably more detail.
Video Tutorial
Triangulating Your Location
1. Stand in a location where you can see two 'known' landmarks. A known landmark is one that has been revealed on your map. Whether or not a structure is known is easily determined by looking at it whilst holding the map. If you see a white triangle symbol, the object is already marked on your chart. A red question mark means that it has yet to be discovered.

2. Holding your map (M), look at one of the known landmarks and left-click. A line will be drawn on the chart in the compass direction you're facing, passing through the object you're looking at. Your current location lies somewhere on that line. To determine exactly where, you'll need to draw another.

3. Look at a second known landmark and left-click. As before, a line will be drawn on your chart. Where the two lines intersect denotes your exact location. Since you now know where you are, a small portion of the map is filled in with observations of your immediate surroundings and any unknown landmarks in the vicinity will be marked on your map as known structures.

That's it! This process will be invaluable throughout the game as you try to work out which direction you should be heading in and when you want to pinpoint a distant new structure, which is the topic of the next section.
Revealing an Unknown Landmark
Continuing from the first section, Triangulating your location, you have now revealed your own position on the map.

4. Now, look at an unknown landmark, one that previously transformed the cursor into a question mark icon. You should see a plus symbol, meaning that the object is ready to be marked.

Left-clicking the landmark will draw a line from your present location in the compass direction that you're facing.

5. It's time to put your map away! You'll now need to hike to another area from which you can see any two known structures as well as the same unknown one. A word of warning: if you're still inline with the landmark and your last location (i.e. you're somewhere on the line that was drawn), the next step won't work.

6. Repeat steps 1 to 3 from Triangulating Your Location to locate yourself and then click the unknown landmark again. It will now be revealed on your chart!

Wrapping Up
You've now triangulated your own position (twice!) and then pinpointed a new structure, allowing it to be used when locating yourself in the future. Congratulations!

@gwynhefar, that's an urn. https://miasmata.fandom.com/wiki/Urns If anyone is not sure what something is, triangulate your position, point at the thing and then look at your map.

I wish there was a legend for what the symbols on the map mean. I can figure out huts and tents and giant heads, but what are the ones that look like a small triangle with lines coming out of the top?

Thanks for this guide. I don't remember having trouble with unknown landmarks when I played several years ago. Now I know why today's attempts to triangulate statues weren't working. :-)

Really good, very clear tutorial. The only thing I'd add is, don't just add one landmark and then put your map away. Always look around for more landmarks and add in as many as you can see, especially if you're on high ground. (Sorry if this sounds obvious, but I've seen quite a few LP videos where the player just triangulated their position and then put their map away when they could have added several more landmarks. Grrrr....) It's also worth scanning along the horizon and coastline as sometimes the triangulation system will pick up landmarks that you can't see cuz the game isn't rendering them.

Just, y'know, keep an eye on the time. And hope you don't hear The Heartbeat.... ;)
