How to kill Armour/Shield Guards with starter gear (tiny guide)
By David
Just a quick nothing special guide I'm making because I've seen half a dozen+ threads about difficulties with armor/shield guards and how far away AP weapons are from the start. It's easier to put a guide up then answer threads that keep popping up. Should work for any mission except Hijack.

Preface (don't read this)
Okay, so I keep seeing armor/shield guard threads popping up with people having difficulties with them, with a lot of wondering about how to do it without the top tier AP stuff you get later. It's probably a short term thing but here's a guide in the mean time since it's possible to straight up deal with guards in 4-5 ways with starting gear.

Literally how
If you've watched the trailer, you already know one way, but it required a device, it can be done with less. If there are unprotected guards, you likely only need a wrench. Otherwise you need a gun. It's not difficult to get either before encountering armor/shields so I'll assume you have a gun.

Wrench: Knock out someone and steal his gun. Otherwise bring your own (preferably silenced).

Before you board the ship, did it have spotlights around the outside (avoid these, or your pod will get shot). If it did, then that means the ships has windows. Otherwise you want to find fuel drums.

Window (it's less destructive):
Bring the guard to the window (e.g. let him spot you, or improvise), then hide in a corner where he can't see you. When he spots you, shoot the glass. Then either use a device, or get your pod to pick you up. You can only do this once per window so try to get as many guards at once.

Fuel Drum (ship may break, but it's fine):
Bring the guard to a fuel drum, make sure you are not in the same room as the fuel drum, and shoot it. If the ship breaks in two, it's fine, you can still board either part by moving your Breaker pod between the airlock and any holes you make. I don't know whether Shield guys can actually survive this but if it vents them they should die. Armour guys get obliterated.

Pickpocket & evade:
Finally this one. This doesn't actually kill them, but it's just as effective if not more so than the above methods, since you don't have to kill every guard to complete your mission, you generally just need the keycards. You can practice this method as much as you like in Practice (Hard) without repurcussions.
Important!: Also it goes without saying that if the guard in question has a keycard, DO THIS FIRST. Nothing is worse than venting a guard who has the keycard you need to proceed. If that does happen... improvise, or always bring a key cloner and use it pre-emptively.

??? (boom):
I believe there's a pod that can deconstruct the enemy ship, which will vent enemies. This only counts as starter gear though if that character starts with this pod, once unlocked.

??? (many booms):
This one involves TWO or more ships. Have fun discovering it. Tip: It helps if the mission only requires Assassination. There's another guide on this one already so I'll leave it blank.

Hope this helps. I left this guide to basics because part of the fun is improvising. There are many, more ways to kill AP/Shield guys without AP weapons by using devices and you can improvise to improve on the above methods in their basic form. Feel free to comment if you want to share the ways with each other.

Here's a list of devices that can assist with killing and getting away safer/easier, but it's basically every device, you can improvise. Maybe later I'll add a second part with different ways of using devices but I don't think it's necessary and not immediately after game release. I just got the game myself and don't know as much as beta players. I could add screenshots, but you can quickly recognize the window rooms once you know to look out for spotlights on the exterior.

Crashbeam (shield only afaik)
Key Cloner (key preservation if you're going to vent the owner)
Sidewinder (all)
Slipstream (all)
Subverter (all, yes it can help with armour but only -sometimes- if turret)
Swapper (all, watch trailer)
Visitor (all)

Possibly more that I missed.

If you're still having problems, then it might be that you have to use more devices and/or stealth. With a sidewinder and a slipstream you should be able to overcome most problems. Even with no devices you can still press F to fast forward and wait for the guard with the most annoying LOS to go on an errand and then slip past.
Credits
Reserved for awesome people and if anybody discovers more ways that require ONLY nothing or a basic unsilenced gun. This guide is for the basics to help people deal with Armour/Shield straight off the bat if they go straight to Hard missions. I'm playing another game atm so it's quite possible there might be more ways before I play more.

Reno: because spotlights is a much better word than flashlights for exterior ship size lights.

Trap throwing is the best way to do this by far imo, as it's infinite, reliable, and cheap.

Buy an early crash trap or acid trap.
Throw it at an enemy (use the T key to enter throwing mode).
Immediately after you click to throw it, pause. (You can hold the slow motion button to do this even more easily - it starts unbound but I have it bound to R).
While the trap is in the air, teleport it back to your inventory.
Then, click to deploy. The trap will maintain the momentum it had when thrown.

It's very accurate and you can even set up bounces around corners. You can break the shields of up to 5 enemies with one throw, and a crash trap also prevents them from sounding alarms.

Trap throwing, slipstream manipulation, slowmo/pause exploitation, and swapper abuse make this game downright trivial in many cases, but I enjoy it none the less.

Something to add: You can use knockback to launch enemies out of an already broken window.

If no one has already mentioned this, a crash beam (and maybe a subverter) can cause the shield in a broken window to 'blink' venting the entire room as if you had broken the window normally.

Here's an idea, If you've already used a window and are on a ship with contractors try to get your hands on a high velocity rifle from one of the trackers. The knockback is enough to both stagger and seriously shove armoured guards, If there just so happens to be a convenient fast track path to space behind them... Well, they shouldn't have been standing there. I suspect the kinetic melee with high knockback is also effective like the concussive hammer though I've yet to test that.

Alright. I better win the internet with this one. Keep in mind that this method is great for dealing with one guy but you're going to get spotted and dealing with multiple enemies is POSSIBLE but difficult at best.

Obtain gun (any)

Kill dudes and take their guns (any)

Shoot armored guy

Pause rapidly as your gun goes bang

Shoot again

Repeat until all of your guns are no longer able to shoot

Use your newfound power to forcibly move armored guy into a window room (you can do this with multiple guys but... it's tricky and requires practice, timing and patience to get the timing down right)

Throw your keyboard out the window (skip this step if you like your keyboard)

Shoot the window.

Boom. You just took out an armored guy without having to lead him someplace, with basic gear and if your guns are silenced you did it without alerting anyone. Oh. And bonus points if there's a lot of people in that room OR BONUS POINTS THE ARMORED GUY WAS THE PILOT!

Insta AP weapon
WARNING: Some might consider some of this a spoiler and/or a cheat; I went and marked it down as such.
Hit esc. and start the tutorial. Complete it until your back at the "Home" waypoint. When your at it, pause and send the "Fiasco's Facebreaker" to the stash (press E to do so). Then pick a new character from the character selection area or button in the esc. menu. Once done, pause and teleport the item(s) to you. This works everytime you need a AP concussive weapon. (WORKING AS OF 4-Oct-2017) Credit to Kawaii for the Facebreaker guide.
Have a good time! -:gordon:

Avoid Hijack in general if it has shields or armour that you might not be able to deal with. Armour technically you start being able to deal with, since the starter station sells grenade launchers, and CGL can be unlocked pretty quickly.

Personal missions can wait until you have tools (which honestly doesn't take long at all, you'll probably get what you need before you can start PM) . You will see if other missions have armour/shields on everything so you can just not take those in the first place and they'll get rerolled. Or just stealth around everything.

You will liberate a station before you can do PM. Liberate stations which get you a High Capacity Key Cloner, a Concussive Grenade Launcher, a Rechargeable High Capacity Sidewinder. They are all fairly quick unlocks and help you avoid large numbers of guards. Get a Glitch Trap, it'll help with Shield guards that you can't knock out with CGL.

Any mission except hijack can be done with stealth though even if every guard has shield & armour.

Shields in small number or armor in small numbers this all may work for

what aboyt the personal missions when everything is armored or shielded... or BOTH >.<

Luckily I found a crashbeam in a cargo crate to help clear out the other 4 shielded dudes.
I really should'nt have taken a hijack mission with shielded enemies when I didn't have a reliable way to deal with them
