As I played on a dirty mattress in Brooklyn as a kid, I once stared at this tree and thought how it actually look like some kind of palm and imagined it as one.....until the wind blew and I got a wiff of the odor and the reality keeps setting back in that this is the King of Weeds around here....or it's a weed in the form of a tree. Perhaps I thought that because there are so many :D

Introducing the "Tree of Heaven" AKA "Ghetto Palm". (Ailanthus altissima)

Many of you know that tree. It grows with the weeds in your back yards and in alleys and ditches,
Many of you know it intimately, through beatings after picking your own switches,
It will be a shrub one day and give you shade in no time as this tree grows FAST,
Better yank these shrubs out the ground if you want your sidewalks and gardens to last,
This tree will grow where other trees will not and even protect its territory like a gangster,
But in China and Taiwan, the tree is at home and respected, and used by many masters.

Some countries consider this tree a weed and have it listed as an invasive species but this tree is native to China and Taiwan where it is revered for medical uses and much more. It's even still used for gardening in some places. I guess if it's introduced where it shouldn't be, like many plants and animals, it will cause problems. That doesn't mean it's a bad thing from nature. It means people need to be more considerate when taking something from one climate and introducing it to another. We have to respect the fact this is one tough tree.
