My favorite races are klackons (industri growth), psilons (research), sakkra (fast population growth), Humans (diplomacy) and meklar (huge industry).
I always start with building scouts, sending them to every starsystem within reach. As long as enemy ships entering starsystems orbited by my scout doesn't have any weapons (early colony ships and scouts), they will always withdraw. This way you slow down enemy expansion, and can often colonize starsystems that without your scouts would fall into enemy hands. Sometimes the enemy colony ships gets equipped with rockets in early game. With a bit of luck you can actually outmanouver the missiles with a scout, yet again forcing the enemy to withdraw.
Rapid expansion is crucial! (Continued)
Don't bother researching tech that you're not going to use frequently. I find ship repair, torpedoes and biological weapons mostly useless.
If you have the choice of researching two similar techs, for example industry tech 8 and 7, always go for the better one, except if you are in rush to get a tech.
Good luck!
You expand as fast as you can and snag a half dozen planets. You probably won't be able to get more. Everyone you meet is relaxed with you, so the turn you meet them you get a non aggression pact and the highest trade agreement available. Also try to trade tech frequently. Research missile tech, planetary shields, and robotic controls. Don't bother building a fleet. The upkeep isn't worth it. Build at least 5 missile bases on each world at first (more later). Stay friends with everyone you can. They might vote for you in the first council. Eventually, if you don't get a lucky vote win, you'll have to go to war. Prepare a fleet in advance and hit your target hard. Late game you'll want neutron stream projector and black hole generators to deal with the enormous enemy fleets.
On Impossible - choose silicoid as race, and like the strat says - spam Col. ships and build all you can. Choose 1 opponent and huge galaxy, and you'll get the best benefit, but they game will take you many hours, and your not guaranteed the vic.
Research shielding and get bases on your planet asap - that will keep the enemy away, and you can focus on transportation of people and research terraforming and other stuff. It's tough but fun.
The best and most challeging but winable setup is Large Gal. with 3 opponents - it's tough but game takes fewer hours....hf.
Can you make a vid?
