Smelly and Noisy Guide on Smells and Noises
De către Silvius
This expansive list provides an overview of all rooms, services and utilities. If they cause any smell or noise, and if so, what the range of these nuisances are. Includes the Las Vegas expansion and Miami Malls DLC. Includes room size for good measure.

Intro
While juggling utility transformers and trying to figure out why half your tower population can't seem to find any coffee, you're constantly looking skyward to plan out your next expansion. After you recounted the cells three times and finally managed to perfectly squeeze in all those rooms on the (always way too narrow) new floors, you're suddenly surprised by nasty fumes from the tech offices, smelling up the workplace of those hypersensitive designers next door.

You see, tenants don't mind sharing an elevator for 50 floors every day with people who just had their fill at the burrito shack, but at home when they are exposed to merely a whiff of fresh baguettes from that French gourmet restaurant further down the hall, they start flipping tables and call the moving company. Add an unlucky prestige hit to the mix and you're one step away from being plagued by a tower exodus of biblical proportions.

For a genius architect such as yourself it's no problem to deal with a world without sound isolation and proper ventilation. However, you’re way too talented to waste time on the guessing game of which tenants might produce sickening smells or maddening sounds. So I took my decibel- and olfactometer and did the work, so you don’t have to. Oh, and I went to malls in Miami and some Las Vegas hotels as well. You’re welcome.

Love,

Silvius

Guide Explanation
This guide contains a long list of all type of rooms in Project Highrise, including those added in Las Vegas and Miami Malls.

  • To find the room you're looking for, use the search function ('ctrl+F' or 'cmd+F') and enter the name of the room (e.g. 'Finance Office') - if you can't find the one you need, try the meta name (e.g. 'Large Office'). Or look it up in the Guide Index.

  • If for example the horizontal 'smell range'-number is 9, this means the smell can be noticed up till 9 cells from the the edge of that room (on BOTH sides!). The vertical number, if for example 2, means the smell is noticeable 2 floors below and above the room. (The same goes for 'noise range')

Additional tips and notes
  • Recycling Bins, while showing the visual to produce smell, do not cause nuisance to anything adjecent to them
  • Don't believe what the tooltip claims: Phone Booths and Common Areas reduce noise and smell range by next to nothing (not even one cell)
  • Unlike every gym I ever visited, the Yoga Club, Personal Trainer and Fitness Club services in this game produce no smell and are even completely silent.
  • All the Public Transit stations are surprisingly quiet (and no smells either)
  • (Miami Malls) The 'Edgy Clothing' and 'Bank Branches' medium stores produce no noise or smell, but they don't mind noise themselves, making them the first stores that are suitable as noise barriers.
  • (Miami Malls) Unlike the Beauty Salons and Pet Stores, the 'Cheese Shops' (normally the worst smelling shops ever) do not produce any odors in this game. Makes you think why they added something as random as a cheese shop in the first place instead of a more common shop theme.
  • (Las Vegas) Event Venues are constantly smelly and noisy, but they do not increase in noise or smell during actual events either.
  • (Las Vegas) Probable bug: Small Housekeeping produces noise, the larger version however produces smell

Hello, I think Video Game Studio in medium office, Newspapers in large office, and Satellite and Antennae in Tower Services also produce noise. Parking Entrance, Parking Ramp and Parking Spot produce both noise and smells.

Yet, smell plays a big part in Project Highrise, and cockroaches/vermin do not. Though I think that would actually be a great idea for the game! Maybe with a special New York edition? :steamhappy:

Anyway, in the end I made the note since plenty of other specialty shops would cross my mind for a skyscraper before I'd think of a cheese shop - hence I expected a specific reason, such as more smell.

> Cheese and, overall, dairy shops are not smelling of anything in our country.
And never were.

Those shops here in the Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy etc. are not dairy shops, they're cheese shops: they specifically focus on cheese. The mold on various types of cheeses produces pungent smells but also the typical flavours. You can easily find that many cheese enthusiasts agree on the common saying: 'the smellier the cheese, the better the flavour'.

Go on, Google 'cheese shop' and smell the images.

However, I do believe you when you say that in the US they’re more like dairy shops, as they aren't in general familiar with such a wide variety of cheeses. Which makes my case that their choice to have a 'cheese shop' in Miami is utterly random even more solid.

Ye I'm also pretty sure some of this info is just wrong. I've followed this guide and still had noise and smell complaints from tenants.

Please update for the DLC tenants. It's not helpful to write "all others" when some of the added tenants have different values.

I love this guide and has been using it religiously. Could you update for Tokyo, London, and Berlin DLC contents please
Entellus Dare 30 ian. 2019 la 17:04
London Life added some new tenants, such as indie dev game studio offices, that behave differently (they generate lots of noise and annoy everybody). Any chance you can update for that? Great guide, otherwise!
