Al Simmons, a CIA agent killed by his own boss, on the orders of Satan, went to hell. To see his wife one last time, he made a deal with the demon Malbolgia and became the immortal "Hellspawn". Spawn tried to maintain his humanity while trying to find a way to break free from Malbolgia's control and fighting various opponents (both supernatural beings and representatives of the criminal world).
