John Haiman, a linguist at Malcalester College says “People who use sarcasm are rarely kidding. The words come from an authentic place, but it’s wrapped up as a joke for protection. Essentially, sarcasm is a survival technique for the insecure. According to John Haiman, “what is essential to sarcasm is that it is overt irony intentionally used by the speaker as a form of verbal aggression.” In other words, there has to be some intent to harm the target of the sarcasm, as opposed to simply teasing them. It is worth mentioning that psychology professionals see sarcasm as a maladaptive coping mechanism, or in plain language, “ignoring a problem instead of solving it”
