Revised my review based on re-installing game to SSD. I will leave my original review in place below, but please, if you take one thing away, take this - USE A SSD.

The core gameplay is utterly fantastic in Wreckfest, but then again if you've seen any gameplay videos you'll know this already; I certainly felt confident of that before buying the game and I wasn't wrong on that score. I won't go into detail about how the cars feel great to drive, with enough realism to make you really concentrate on your driving technique, while still making it as fun to jump into as any of the old classic from back in the day. Nor will I make a point of rattling on about how it's so much fun to jump from jouncing around gravelly mud-pits one minute to nascar-like oval racing with inches of clearance to the rest of the grid the next moment.

I'm revising my review because having re-installed onto SSD all the issues in my original review below are resolved. This needs to be made explicit imo as it utterly changes the game - not in terms of gameplay, but in terms of the basic practicalities of getting into a lobby and having a fun race vs people. And once this is sorted, the game shines. Population seems really good, I rarely if ever can't find a decent lobby, if anything sometimes during peak times you're spoiled for choice, and this is from a pure pug player so far.

So In all fairness having resolved that issue, Wreckfest is pretty much my perfect racing game, caveated only by the fact you need to have it on an SSD or risk some horrible loading-lag in online races which may be a game-breaker for some players.

** ORIGINAL REVIEW **
Great if all you want is a single player game, this should be the most fun racing game I've ever played but I haven't had a single half-decent online session once, and since I bought this as a multiplayer game, that's the whole point for me.

Unfortunately it's just too unreliable connection-wise. Every race I seem to have a great ping in the lobby, and then in-race I spawn in and it's 30 seconds into the race, I'm wrecked and the field are a lap up on me, if my car is even still driveable. Each session I will maybe get one good race where this doesn't happen. Perhaps.

Unfortunately it takes all the fun out of the game, and without that, what's the point?
You see, a mad racing racing game like where chaos can and does happen; you might end up wrecked, spun out or upside down is massive fun - IF - you can always have another race later. But when your one and only good game of the session ends in another player wrecking you, then this game is suddenly no fun at all, you feel like you've been griefed, even if the other guy was just playing the way it is intended..

My fibre connection is pretty good, and no other game gives me problems like this it feels like it just doesn't function correctly.

That aside, if you read the description as being for a purely single-player game it's spot-on, but for someone like me who wanted a fun online game, I can't help but feel I have chucked my money away.
