For how amazing this game is I also think it has a lot holding it back.

I have experienced most of what this game has to offer through 4 different playthroughs and I think there's things that hold it back from being a "masterpiece"

This game is objectively one of the best of this century, almost limitless combinations of weapons, (more than any other souls game by far), more spells and incantations and just limitless possibilities in terms of a unique build.

Elden Ring offers you almost anything you want even from the start of the game, and I think that's where some of my problems start to begin.

Elden Ring is the most non-linear game in the "souls fromsoftware series" which means you can do and go wherever you want strait from the beginning. Because of this it runs into other problems that most other open world games don't run into, and that's because of the way you get stronger. In previous "souls" games you were way more limited on how much you could level up due to the access of areas you have at certain point of the game; that means its way more difficult to get "overpowered" at points you shouldn't be. Not to say other "souls" entries did not have their balancing perfect by any means, as souls games tend to be, on purpose or not. In Elden Ring you can access a majority of the map from the get go and go wherever you want which I think breaks a lot of the natural progression of the game. Certain areas of the map have differently scaled difficulty's depending on where Fromsoft "wants" you to go from start to finish. I think that breaks a lot of the "open world magic" so to say where it makes it hell if you want to go somewhere you're not leveled enough for and can be disheartening for a place you wanted to explore.

The same goes for the opposite, you can "cheese" or somehow kill a major enemy you probably shouldn't have encountered until a higher level. This becomes a way you can totally make the game difficulty trivial and wipe most bosses with basically no difficulty. When you trivialize the difficulty of a game of which that has a lot of its identity that it is one of the most difficult games to play it seems like Fromsoft didn't care about difficulty scaling around your level which (I think) can hold the game back at least for me. The difficulty scaling also takes a weird jump around 4/5th's into the game (main story wise); in where I think is a huge skill check regardless if you were "overpowered" until that point or not. It made the game tedious and unfun for a lot of players (at least according to things I have read from other players online). Although I think it does even out at the every end of the game.

It might seem like I didn't enjoy the game, especially with the way Ive been talking about it. I wanted to talk about the biggest issue with the game that I (at least) have that keeps it from being a "masterpiece" but its also at the end of the day my opinion and it doesn't matter what I think of the game as long as you have your own opinion of the game.

Regardless of the issues I have with this game, Elden Ring is also one of the best games I have ever played. It have some of the best/unique character and enemy types in all of the souls games. This game has some of the most, in depth, side quests and some of the most interesting lore of the series. Although there is a lot that took from my enjoyment of this game, I wouldn't be writing a in depth review of the game if I didn't love it. I 100%ed the game and enjoyed so much of it. Its rare for me to sit through a full playthrough of any game. But Elden Ring keeps me glued to my screen the whole time, no matter how frustrating it gets. Elden Ring is a amazing game to say the least, one of the few games to get me emotional at times as well.

Ill be coming back to this game once the DLC comes out and maybe some of the problems I had with the game wont even exist anymore. But as of this review I would rate Elden Ring a 8/10. An amazing game.
