theres a point in this game where everything just clicks together. you figure out what builds you like and you begin to scale the difficulties and solo previously unbeatable odds

and when that happens the game has you, it has trapped your soul
everytime i go to bed i wake up in a cold sweat, the words 'BREAK THE RULES! (Let it loose!)' swirling around my head
whenever i get hurt in a game or irl i have an instinctual response to yell 'AGHHH, AM DYING!' or 'AGHHH, I NEED A MEDIC BAG!' and whenever i do follow through with it i yell these quotes out in a dead on accurate impression of dallas
help me

oh yeah and one of the cosmetic dlcs has kitty gloves so thats cool too i guess

Alright you chops, Today were travelling to Stockholm. A dear friend of mine has contracted us to break into this office owned by Starbreeze to retrieve their game servers, My friend has always been a dwankie. But Locke doesn't ask questions and so do you, No? **FOR SURE.** We must sneak into the offices and steal the servers, However if you prefer. You can always just go guns blazing and shoot some kerels, Just be careful around the servers. From what I heard. They are precious, Yeah? **FOR SURE.**

Stealth is an option.

psa: the matchmaking servers arent working and theres a plethora of other issues with the game, read other reviews for issues and stick to payday 2 for now

suspect was holding a civilian hostage so i threw a stinger grenade at them
stinger impacts the civilian in the face and instead of obeying the laws of gravity the stinger grenade sticks onto the civilians face mid-air

stinger explodes
that same civilian will now need skin grafts

the game is great atmospherically and is great for casual players, the held block helps weird wonky swing manipulation from being effective but the combat system is overinflated with additions that just complicate it for no reason (heavy attacks and jabs) and the attack animations compared to mordhau are much more wonky and ridged and some people have abused this by making certain swing types look like other swing types, making countering ineffective

it also doesnt help that 90% of the games combat boils down to mirror matches where you and your opponent just counter each other until one of you screws up

customization is also a big issue, unlike mord where you can customize anything about your loadout, from the chestplate to the shoes. chiv 2 is restricted to body armor sets and helmets and some of these sets look a bit tacky and stylized.

aside from cosmetic customization there is also barely any loadout/weapon customization, your given four classes and usually three subclasses that you can pick from, all with their own strengths and weaknesses and are restricted to their class weapons. so unique playing styles are completely out the window as you cant be creative with loadout customization, compare this to mordhau where play styles range from your usual heavy knight to a wannabe shaolin monk jumping and weaving through attacks.

and if your the type of guy who is frustrated and annoyed by ranged fighters in these types of games then you won't like the fact that two out of the three melee classes you can pick from have subclasses that have throwables and are pretty much played like pseudo-archers, staying in the back line and throwing throwing knives that deal an absurd amount of damage and unlike the dedicated archers, they can actually hold their own in melee.

chivalry 2 sets out to make the slasher genre more open to casual players and it achieves that but it's held back by its janky combat mechanics and lack of customization, as a person whose been playing mordhau casually on and off for a long time and have reached what is probably the zenith of casual skill in there, mordhau just seems more appealing.

however if your intimidated by mordhau then get this game, you'll have good fun.
but, mordhau. despite all of it's flaws has surprisingly less jank than this.

Its a simple strategy game that isn't as complex as something like the total war series while still having the good bits of the RTS genre in a small compact bite size piece.

big word exposition below dont read beyond this if you aint gonna read all that:

Bad North doesn't offer much to the player in units. You basically get three unit types that can be upgraded into their max but don't have any diverging paths you can upgrade into. These 3 are:

The Infantry. Shielded swordsmen that can block arrows and hold well.
The Archer. Archers that start off terrible at the first tier but once upgraded they can decimate any foolish norse raider that decided to not bring a shield.
The Pikemen. Guys with long pikes (spears) that can hold against, God willing. Any pagan. Even the brutes, But are completely unable to fight while moving or repositioning and god forbid you ever position them in the view of enemy archers.

This unit roster might seem lackluster but they fill their roles so perfectly that you won't be asking more. The infantry can block arrows for the pikes. The pikemen can hold choke points and especially hills with amazing effect. And the Archers can provide support for the melee troops and sometimes even shoot vikings off of their boats before they even reach the shore of your island!

What gives these units so much worth is the (one for each unit) skills you can buy and upgrade for them and the items you can gain from islands. But especially the Commanders.

The commanders are basically your only way of getting and fielding these units, You start off with two commanders that are plain average joes with no special traits or even a proper unit. Starting off with commanding the basic militia unit comparable to a generic peasant unit from any other kind of RTS. A unit that has weaknesses all across the board but no strengths, Only relying on support from stronger units or sheer numbers to win. But even if they do win they will usually come out of a fight having traded half of their men. If they even win at all.

But once you get some money you can upgrade your two starter commanders into one of the proper units you can choose from and from there it is only uphill..that is if you somehow LOOSE a commander in battle.
The only way to recruit a commander is by fighting on islands that have a local commander, Sometimes in the late game they might be either an archer, infantry or pike. But most of the time you'll be getting militia commanders early on into the game.

So you'll often find yourself relying on your oldest and most veteran commanders to fight battles early on and in the mid-game and loosing one is detrimental to your run. When they fall in battle. They don't get wounded and get knocked out for the next battle or two, They straight up **DIE** and you will loose that commander, their upgrades. their items. and their unit for the entire game unless you get a rare item that lets you revive them.

And you can only ever deploy 4 commanders during a battle when you could be fighting more than 100+ enemies in one level alone, Which. In the hard difficulty makes the game more challenging and fun. Where proper positioning, Upgrades and the well timed use of items or skills can turn the tide in your favour. Especially positioning.

But with all these things for you. The items, The units. The skills. What do the vikings have?
Well at the start they'll probably only send in a few small boats containing maybe 2-5 viking equivalents of the militia that can be dealt with easily but later on they will begin sending in shield vikings that can block your archers arrows and are more capable of defending themselves, They will start sending in archers to shoot at your exposed pikes and counter snipe your own archers. And sometimes they will just send in a big boat of militia vikings at you that can easily overrun a lone unit.

But that's not all! as you get stronger and progress through your run, The more stronger the norsemen get. They will begin to send in shielded huscarls that throw axes before charging in with their swords and shield. dual-wielding leapers that jump onto units, Capable of disrupting formations (especially pikes!) into a mess and deal bloody damage. Towering brute vikings that. While susceptible to arrows and laughed away by well placed and readied pikes, Can deal monstrous amounts of damage against infantry and emphasize breakthroughs in your defence.

And lastly the wet-your-pantitis inducing brute archers that use basically handheld ballistas that can shred through formations.

All of this, And some unmentioned mechanics like fleeing and healing your units and etc makes this simple game fun and enjoyable but there is one thing that causes this games downfall: replayability.

The game doesn't have much in the way of replayability besides collecting starting traits and items. Every run is basically the same unless you challenge yourself by using one unit type or changing the difficulty.
But Bad North is a game that is fun on the first playthrough and can be played countless of times after. After your first run it's a good game to play to pass some time when you don't know what to play or just want some challenging but simple RTS gameplay.

you gotta try this game, at least once

If you are looking at this game today. Don't buy it. You missed the bus.

I've been on and off playing Isonzo since its release and in my opinion it was a fun (but flawed) game with some silly to downright frustrating bugs that can be glossed over and ignored when compared to the immense amount of fun this game could offer, For one such image as an example:

The officer yelling "Angriff!" as he blows his whistle. The roaring engines of a bomber squadron flying overhead releasing their payload of bombs onto the point. Wiping out the defenders as the attacking team swarms in just in time to meet the newly respawned defenders.

Combat being reduced into a hectic brawl of rifle and melee as gas obscures the point as both teams participate in a crazy dance of death with grenades, maces and knives. The game being kicked into overtime for 10 minutes straight as both sides are urged on by climactic music until one side finally prevails.

And that was just your average match of Dolomites!

Now? it's almost rare to get such action. The chaotic combat reduced into a frustrating uphill battle against A.I (which seem more A than I sometimes!) that switch between having terrible accuracy to being blessed by the gods of marksmanship on a whim.

Beautiful looking maps. That if you were to remove the bots, Would certainly have a tumbleweed or two passing through with how empty they are without players.

There's still some enjoyment you can get from the game especially if your in Europe or North America as there's still some players that get on in those regions every now and then but everywhere else is nothing but a ghost town.

It's sad and unfortunate because this game is capable of giving you the most chaotic and fun experience a shooter can ever have but ever since the hype train has slowed and died. Having been replaced by player burnout and boredom. The game just isn't the same and doesn't offer that same thrilling experience that a lot of people like me experienced on launch week.

To give a summary: The game is dead. With an average of 254 players on, It isn't dead dead but compared to the whopping **4,160** players that the game used to have. It is. And it has been bleeding players more than it is gaining players.

But if your in NA or Europe (or just willing to play with 200+ ping) and don't mind playing with mostly bots every now and then. Then this review won't stop you, If your able to get into one of the last few servers that are still alive in this game then I assure you .You will either have the most fun in your life or be left with a sour taste in your mouth.

But if your not that kind of person then avoid this game and wait for the next shooter this studio releases.

Thanks for coming to my Tedtalk.

edit: switched the review to a positive review cuz i felt it doesnt make sense that this was a negative review before. i still agree that you should avoid the game if your not the kind of person to wait for a server to pop.

final edit: changed up some words n stuff

The first match I ever had on this game was on a small server with 78 people.

Joined a team and clumsily figured out the controls and followed the officer around with the boys.
He leads us up a hill where we shoot down at some enemies running across an open field.
Everybody begins talking about random stuff, Am reloading my musket. It's the 7th shot I have fired by now.

The officer walks over to the right of the line and talks about the enemy artillery.
Suddenly the Officer and the lines right flank gets gored by an enemy cannon ball; what's rest of the line erupts into panicked pandemonium of screaming, crying. and yelling.

10/10 good game
