The day is March 24, it is late at night, early into quarantine. My “homie” sends me a message saying that the game Tomb Raider by is completely free for today only. After downloading this “Terrific Origin Story” I neglected to play it right away. This is because my homie and I had our admittedly tiny (at least on my part) minds blown by Steam and the amount of free games there are on the amazing platform. We both, in the safety of our respective homes, rush to the free games page of the steam store. That was when it happened, the game that changed it all. The game that is the subject of this review. Now, let us take a deep dive into the three most important (in my opinion) parts of Super Bernie World.
To start off with the symbolism in the writing. The “Goomba” of the game are the M.A.G.A hats. The way Bernie crushes them and swiftly moves on really shows how many minds he has changed. The M.A.G.A hats symbolize people who would wear them, and Bernie represents Bernie. The people who would wear such a hat may disagree with Bernie at first, but once they hear him out, they may change their mind. This game has lots of enemies like this, that resemble real-world people,objects and situations. To go through all of them would be to neglect all of the other parts of this game that are executed so very well.
Next, the gameplay, and game design. You may think Bernie World is a cheap knock off of another obscure indie gem called Super Mario World. However, you, my friend, are wrong. While Mario puts fun character movement over high difficulty, Bernie World has challenging, restrictive character movement. Bernie controls so easily, and simply, but it's the level design that is hard, not the controlling of Bernie. The levels are jam-packed with enemies, which will one-shot you if you are without a power-up, I think this is the first game to do that. The game’s difficulty is expressed mainly, however, through the platforms themselves. At first you will be spoiled (in a way) with space for Bernie to move, jump on, and avoid enemies. But as you progress through the game, platforms are few and far between, and enemies are not.
Finally, the graphical design. I have played/watched games like the Witcher 3, Uncharted 4, God of War, and Breath of the WIld, to name a few. None of these games' graphical capabilities can hold a candle to Bernie’s cutting-edge, high-res graphical power and style. This style that I speak of is so very clear and creates a special sense of immersion in this Fictional setting known in-game as “New Mexico”.
