Krokodil, also known as desomorphine, is a highly dangerous and illegal synthetic opioid that is much stronger than morphine but has a shorter duration of effect. It is usually homemade using over-the-counter codeine combined with toxic household chemicals such as gasoline, paint thinner, hydrochloric acid, red phosphorus, and iodine. Because of the impure and corrosive nature of the drug, it causes severe damage to the body, especially at the injection site. Users often suffer from rotting flesh, scaly greenish-black skin (which led to the name "krokodil"), and serious infections that can result in gangrene and amputations.

The drug is extremely addictive, with effects lasting only about 90 minutes, causing users to inject it repeatedly, often many times a day. Long-term use leads to massive physical destruction, including organ damage, brain damage, and death—typically within 1 to 2 years. In addition to the physical harm, krokodil can cause intense psychological effects, including hallucinations, aggression, and severe withdrawal symptoms. It is considered one of the most harmful street drugs in the world, often used as a cheaper substitute for heroin in areas with limited access to other opioids.
