The main draw of this game to me is how you can completely customize your empire. It's not like a lot of 4X games where you're stuck with the same fixed list of empires you can play. You can also play sub-optimally on lower difficulty levels and instead focus on role-play, making decisions because of your empire's ethics/civics and not because it helps you win the game. I also like how there are SO many options on the new game screen. I can choose to exclude certain things I don't care for. The game is effectively optimized for fun.

Now, it's definitely not without its bugs. This game has been around for some time, and boy has it built up a lot of bugs. But the devs tend to actually listen to the players and are always trying to fix those bugs. Generally they don't let game-breaking bugs go longer than a week without a hotfix.
