As someone who has been playing destiny since alpha of Destiny 1 on console and has put almost 1000 hrs on just steam i feel im well qualified to recommend this to people yes while it is f2p you do need to buy dlc but small price to pay for being able to experience everything this game has to offer. Sure lfg isnt always fun but once you find a group worth sticking with the game becomes much more fun than being solo
