courtesy

"the showing of politeness in one's attitude and behavior toward others."

Respect is BY DEFINITION earned.

Now, if you choose to admire others for simply being alive, then feel free to respect anyone and everyone; that's certainly your choice.

However, civilized people owe one another simple courtesy and decency.

We can - and I would argue should - reserve respect for those who earn it.
