You can earn Golden Eagles (Currency MAINLY obtainable with money) pretty hard, but it is posseble to get them normally trough daily rewards. With GE (Golen Eagles) You can get premium planes, ships, tanks or Helicopters which give you a boost in research which you need to unlock normally ontained vehicles.I think you can progress without them, but they do help a lot.

The game has a lot of vehicles from the 1930's to 90's, I love the game and totally recommend it.
