I personally don't have a microphone but still have found this game to be an amazing source of fun. Depending on the server you are able to either do your own solo run or team up with a squad. The communication aspects, even without speaking, are quite amazing.

You will especially like this game if:
-You like the idea of teamwork and have fun working with a group.
-Like the idea of both CQC and long range combat.
-Have a love for the fog of war, as you can easily be in close contact without knowing.
-Are fine with not always being in combat.

A few notes:
-The maps are big enough to give a wide variety of areas to visit, but still small enough where you can run across the map in reasonable time. Along with this, with the change in battle you may even get enemy contact while staying back and fortifying a base. Its a really nice balance.
-To start, try being a medic. Being a medic allows you to focus on building trust with your team and gives you plenty of experience running around during heavy combat. Along with this, since you are healing others, you dont have to be instantly good at the shooting mechanics.
-All systems, even mortars, are pretty easy to use. Often ive seen squad leaders even offer assistance during battle for those who have never used one. The only big learning curve id say is anti tank weapons and bullet drop.
-Have fun! If you have a mic make sure to laugh with your team. Especially at the start of a round it is always fun with people playing music or doing shenanigans. Ive never really felt disappointed after loosing a battle. You almost always have fun either way, winning is just an extra thing.

Downsides? Ive not found many so far in my limited play time. The only big issue ive personally experienced is some stuttering, though ive heard that it may be due to a recent graphics update.
