⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀intention directed toward the
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀data of experience motivates each inference.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀This intention consists in the clarification of the data
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀in order to attain to the ultimate end of optimal
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀preferentiality.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀I do not claim that the intentional knowledge intrinsic to
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀science, art, and religion
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀makes those fields of endeavour interested;
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀merely that some such end must be
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀considered the referent of all knowledge in the sceptic's
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀argument.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀Insofar as inferences from actual sense-data are made,
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀these concern the task of coherently organizing
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀experience and thus inferring the conditions for
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀that state which is the intrinsic objective of intentionality.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀this 'intended state' has to be closer examined.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀Now, the definition I had offered of it was that it is
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀optimally preferential.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀Intentionality, I said, is implied by the presence of this
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀preferential quality.
