TL:DR if you want to skip my yapping. The game is amazing as the reviews already show. Play it. Simple

The Original Dead Space is easily my favorite horror game that I’ve ever played through. Despite some of it’s aged level design and few gameplay mechanics like the zero gravity sections for example, the direction that was taken making the dark, creepy, and desolate atmosphere of the Ishimura with gameplay blended so perfectly well into visual itself while offering graphic and horrific, sometimes stress inducing, is what made the game standout the most in my opinion. The game does a fantastic job of making sure you feel the horrific and hopeless situation you’re in while playing as Isaac and it does so much to make sure you don’t feel like you’re escaping that scenario. When I first heard that this beloved game was getting a remake after so long of no hope that EA would touch this series after Dead Space 3 not making the numbers they wanted, I was excited but scared. Despite all the games having their moments of horror and scares, the original Dead Space had a level of dread in its setting and direction that the other games were not able to match. I was even more worried with Callisto Protocol…being Callisto Protocol. And let’s be for real, this is EA, not the best track record.

To see that EA and the developers not only made sure to keep the spirit of what made the original game alive and refreshing, but in some ways make it even better than the original! (I do have my icks on a few changes but I would be petty to have that be a drag to what they managed to accomplish.) It comes to full surprise that they’ve managed to do so well.

The graphics are perfect, not too little to argue if it is an upgrade and not too to where you feel like it’s not Dead Space anymore. The gameplay is better than I could have imagined. From reworks to the arsenal of the original. Thanks to the interaction and secondary fire changes, every weapon feels strong and unique. In the original I honestly constantly ran with 3 weapons with my 4th option being a filler incase of low ammo. In the remake every weapon is worth using now. A weapon like the Flamethrower was absolute garbage in the original, but on here it’s unbelievable how fun and good it is now. For a good 2 hours on one of my play sessions, I was In disbelief I haven’t used the Plasma cutter for so long when in the original I wouldn’t dare myself to take it off. The new Zero Gravity sections are a much needed change and all of them don’t feel annoying and a chore to do. Being able to explore more parts of the Ishimura is a great and terrifying experience with the new director making sure you don’t have a moment of peace and silence in your horrific journey. The game does even more to make sure you don’t escape the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ you’re in with the new director and no loading screens essentially anywhere. The detail of Necromorphs being torn apart as you damage them is endless fun with how the weapons perform now. With all the changes to how the game plays, it manages to go beyond of what the original managed accomplish in a lot of ways.

There are some things that I can’t say are perfect. I won’t get into the story too much as I don’t want this review to involve spoilers, but the change of Isaac not being voiceless is a bit of a mixed change. While I do love how they make Isaac be more empathetic and interactive in the story, having him be voiceless allowed characters to be more attachable to the player. Some of the changes to the characters are still a bit jarring, like Hammond for example, but I’m not gonna trash it like it’s downright bad. It’s something I think can be a debate for some people. And some particular story moments, like the ending for example can also be debated if the original was done better.

But I digress. This remake of Dead Space is a great and welcomed surprise from EA. Motive were able to do a fantastic job of bringing Dead Space back, making it feel like a new experience while also keeping the original intact. In its entirety, it’s still the original. But playing it makes it feel like it’s a brand new game all over again. This is by far one of the best remakes I’ve ever played and I can’t recommend it enough.
