Flying in the face of the ever-increasing sophistication of first-person shooters, a little developer called Croteam decided to make an FPS the way they used to be made. The original Serious Sam was a colorful, chaotic romp through a world filled with numerous inventive enemies. Sam's Second Encounter offered loads of new content but few actual improvements in terms of gameplay or graphics. Today Croteam finally released the first "official" sequel to the original, the imaginatively named Serious Sam II.

Last year Left 4 Dead unleashed a harrowing and entertaining vision of what it's like to be on both sides of the zombie apocalypse. Whether you were shooting your way through hordes of infected (the preferred nomenclature) en route to possible rescue, or scheming with your fellow superpowered zombies (an acceptable colloquialism) in an effort to choke, eviscerate, and otherwise kill the intrepid survivors, Left 4 Dead was enormously fun. The only real drawback was the shortage of content. Left 4 Dead 2 does not have this problem, offering five new campaign maps that can be enjoyed across five uniquely engaging game modes. These campaigns are more diverse, more atmospheric, and more exciting, thanks largely to the stellar level design. Left 4 Dead 2 also improves on the original in almost every other way, featuring new weapons, new items, new enemies, and new survivors that make the game richer across the board. Though the core action remains largely unchanged, the widespread enhancements make Left 4 Dead 2 even better than its impressive predecessor. This is one zombie apocalypse you do not want to miss.

The creators of A Way Out asserted that their split-screen prison break adventure would revolutionise co-op games. Perhaps it will - only time can reveal its lasting influence after all. But for it to reach that status it has to go up against the game which, for my money at least, perfected co-op almost ten years ago: Left 4 Dead.

Since the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot, Lara has come a long way as a character, and the developers have too. Gone are the slightly horror movie-esque moments where Lara is weak and howling, along with the snuff-movie style deaths (apart from the occasional impaling). Instead this is a Lara who’s learnt how to handle pain, command an arsenal of weapons and kill droves of enemies.

In a year dominated by brilliant open-world games, Just Cause 3 still manages to make its mark in style. In a way, it’s the happy-go-lucky sibling of Metal Gear Solid 5, with both games following war-weary, bearded freedom fighters catching up with old friends, revisiting past glories and attempting to save the world just one last time. There’s no stealth, of course – Rico Rodriguez only has one volume setting, which is LOUD – and Just Cause 3 has no pretensions to art or cultural significance. It just wants to p.a.r.t.y. and cause a few big bangs along the way.

Even though other games are better at specific elements like crafting, combat, survival, and exploration, I’ve never played a survival game that combines them quite like Rust. The way it blends survival and competitive genres is fun, especially if you enjoy the goofier bits, like firing rocket launchers at a naked man running from a pig, or being stabbed to death by a person blasting Russian music over their microphone and brandishing a spear. It’s weirder and less polished than the competition, but that’s part of the fun.

Growth is an important factor in Global Offensive, especially if you're coming into Counter-Strike fresh or after a sabbatical. This is an extremely hardcore, skill-based first-person shooter, and it forces you to think differently than other modern shooters. If you’re a Call of Duty player, you’re going to need to change your play style to succeed here. Counter-Strike also tries developing into something new here as well, despite doing little to push itself beyond what it’s always done best. Global Offensive modifies old maps to keep veterans on their toes, and introduces official new modes that encourage different play styles for the first time in almost 15 years. JUST AWESOME!
