Going to start by saying that this is a good game. If you liked the past BT games you'll probably have some fun with this one. However, it definitely is a step down from BT3 IMO. IK thats an unpopular opinion to have, but I really think people should get over the hype and listen to more criticism for this game.

The story feels pretty slapped together and lazy. Hardly any cutscenes, and most cinematics are basically slideshows or character models standing around. The only other significant single player content is custom battles. Custom battles are a fun idea but are a pain to create. All the dialogue and names aren't alphabetical and the categorization dialogue choices are under make no sense.

Multiplayer feels janky and buggy, on top of poor balancing. Balancing has always been skewed in the BT games but this one has some egregious things beyond faster normal attacks and extra health. Some characters can just deal more damage per combo than others, some have innate hyper armor, and some (like Z Broly) have unblockable and downright unavoidable ultimates due to their sheer size. On top of poor character balancing the game has awful connection issues. I constantly see people get disconnected from tournament and player matches.

The new gameplay mechanics are pretty bad IMO. I like the ideas but the execution makes matches feel way too counter based. There are four counters in the game, and they really over complicate the gameplay. The forward X/Square and Vanish counters in particular feel very inconsistent which adds a lot of frustration on top of unblockable attacks from the meta characters (Which of course everyone in ranked is playing). The new "Revenge Counter", which essentially disrupts an opponents combo, costs two bars of a limited skill resource, doesn't reach behind you, and can also be countered itself. Its effectively useless. Even more frustrating, sparking mode is insanely overpowered and you can reach it very easily needing only one skill bar. They really ought to have switched the costs of sparking mode and revenge counter. Worst of all though is the dash behind move. There is a move that places your character right behind the opponent, it feels cheap, and adds a sickening amount of head-turning to the game flow. You constantly have to play defense behind yourself as well as in front, leaving the general gameplay feeling nausea-inducing with the constant movement.

To conclude, there is a lot to like here. The game still feels like a BT game at its core with the massive roster, expansive multiplayer game options, tournament mode, story mode what-ifs, and new beautiful visuals. However new gameplay elements, connection issues, and a poor story mode leave me to say I can't recommend this game to someone hoping for an experience equal to or better than Budokai Tenkaichi 3. Many of these issues can likely be patched or fixed later, however for now bearing this all in mind, I'd have to rate the game 7/10.

P.S. Also charging $30 for the anime music, which isn't even included in the ultimate edition, is incredibly scummy.
