This game was quite a ride. The beginning of it was more investigation / thriller getting more progressively horror and cerebral towards the end. There is a bit of a twist in terms of the main story too that is nicely weaved in with the killer the protagonist is hunting.

The gameplay was straightforward as there is not much to the investigation mechanic besides scanning objects. Most of the focus is on the scanning and piecing together or finding the next piece of an investigation, so there is no challenge from hostiles. There are parts where you enter the minds of certain characters to piece together details needed to progress the story. These are self contained segments that are more experienced and have slight interactive moments. They become more and more intense as the game progress, which suggests the protagonist is losing grip with reality. This is a nice immersive element that makes sense given the details the game presents.

The setting is mostly contained within a building and some underground segments, but even so it doesn't feel old or repetitive. There are enough parts that take you within dreamscapes, so in that way the building doesn't feel stale or restricting. The side quests are also memorable and the general foreboding mood makes the game consistently creepy. There is no escaping the dread of the world in this one as everything we see and read through the lore texts found throughout the game paint a traumatized society.

The theme is definitely cyberpunk but with none of the glitzy decay seen in other media. All the hallmarks are present: augmentation, technological escapism, corporate control, questions around humanity and identity. The delivery and execution was unique, and the ending will stay with you for a bit, especially if you were exploring and trying to get as much of the lore as possible. If you are a fan of cyberpunk, this is a game to definitely play.
