Elder Sign is a boardgame, and this is one of the most excellent computer adaptations of a boardgame I know.
The rules are not excatly the same from the boardgame, but it's a very good set of rules for single player use of the game.

It's a pity the game has neither online multiplayer nor achievements, but I guess multiplayer would be hard to adopt as the boardgame is cooperative and requires a lot of talking or chatting. The achievement would be a really nice addition to it. Something like achievements for beating every elder and for beating them with every character would be nice.

Early Access Review
Empfehlung!

I've had this game sitting in my library before trying it out, but now that I did, I just love it.

It is a game about programming. That said, I imagine that neither professional programmers nor people who don't like that kind of mental exercise would enjoy it ... though the programmers at least might, but then as an easy passtime.

For people who are interested in programming, but never have done so, people who want to try programming to find out if it could be for them and people with a little programming experience, it is just a great puzzle game. After the initial levels, such players need to put some thinking in solving the levels, and solving both challenges to each level will often prove difficult (but still fun).

I normally do not play more than one or two levels every time, so I am way from completing it, let alone solving all the challenges. I guess, I would get annoyed if I did too much of at in one run, but as I do it, it will provide me with some fun and challenge every day for quite a while, and I love it!

The one thing that is really annoying is that you can click to switch the music off in the levels - but you have to do so every time. There is no way to switch music off completely or to switch sound off at all ingame.

Shooters is not what I normally play these days. I remember playing them when I was younger, but it's not normally what I spend my money on today.
So why playing this one? First thing is: It is a retro one - not in it's graphics (after intro) which quite often is what makes a game being called retro, but in the feel of playing it. The graphics are modern and smooth to the eye, and at the same time not too demanding on the graphic card. I can play this game on my laptop (not a gaming one), and it will not overheet it in seconds like other games of the kind do. The second very nice thing is that the game can be controlled by controller or keyboard - and keyboard control works just fine. I've heard that controller makes the game even nicer to play, but for me the time for playing a game like this is when I'm travelling, and I don't carry a controller on these occasions. So having a shooter responding well to keyboard control is a nice thing.

The game is quite demanding and I guess you need some skill to master it (I am far from that at this point). But at the same time it is not only muscle memory and being quick on the controls, but you have to think your way through it. Someone called it a puzzle shooter - that's quite what it is and what makes it an interesting and relaxing game to play.

Insgesamt: Empfehlung!

This game is well worth playing if you like casual games, especially versions of solitaire. It runs smoothly and has 20 achievements, none of which is too hard to get. I guess a run through would amount to some 10-15 hours in total (I have some more as with these casual games, I often leave them running doing something else). I don't see much replayablitity, but for 10 hours of gameplay, it has a decent price.
One thing noteworthy: The in-game store is only about in-game currency, and if you are after all the achievements, you should visit it in time, because three of the achievements are about the items you can unlock there (and have to use 50 times each for getting the achievements).

The game description is really to the point, but in this case this might be a drawback as it might not sound too interesting to people who would enjoy playing it. If you like things like FTL, Convoy or even Darkest Dungeon - hard, turn based strategy -, you will probably enjoy this one, too. What I especially like, is that every run only takes litte time (a couple of hours at most), but for mastering the missions and the normal game at hard mode, it will take you some time.
Highly recommending it!

I love this game! It's a tower defense, and quite a classic one from all of the mechanics. So I think it is a good one for people trying tower defense for the very first time - you can easily learn that kind of game with this one. But if you are already into it, the setting is a really nice twist: You don't just defend a castle, a town or the like, you have to defend your body against different kinds of pathogens which all have their strengths and weaknesses you have to adapt your defense to.
