Unturned has been one of the time consuming games I've ever played. This is not to say that its due to any negative reason, rather, like most survival craft games, it requires constant attention to succeed and survive in pvp servers. Unlike rust, I can go into a server, engage in pvp, and 9 times out of 10 I won't be verbally assaulted with the N word. Communities tend to be far more tame but also extremely active and dedicated as the game provides for incredible flexibility (due to its engine) through both mods but also freedom to mess around with game mechanics in game (building barricades shells on vehicles comes to mind). Having met some of my best online friends through this game, I have no other choice but to recommend this game with the fullest conviction. (Also if you're wondering, no its not dead and no, unturned plus/gold whatever is not really worth it).

I've been playing this game for a little over 4 years now, and I have to say it's one of the best games I've paid for on this platform. From darkrp, to sandbox, to just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ around in single player, the sheer versatility of servers make this game well worth your while. Despite this being nearly two decades old, it's still very alive with a ♥♥♥♥ ton of players. I heavily recommend getting this.
