Portal is another Grade-A game by the boys at Valve, but is it as god-like as people say.

The Positives

- Very original concept.

- Totaly unique game mechanic.

- Graphics IMO hold up better than some of the other older Source games like CSS or DoD: Source. Play with HDR enabled for the full effect, the lighting is amazing.

- A very subtle story that is not told really throught the main game but more through the many secrets hiding behild the pearly white walls of Apeture Science.

- The game can get challenging, but not really in the unfair way, this game requires you to think things through and to take your time, it is a puzzle game after all.

- For the most part the game has great pacing, there are only 1 or 2 spots in the game where I feel the game slows to a crawl or feels tedious.

- The game is easy to pickup and play, and after your first or second playthrough you could easily breeze through the game like it was nothing.

The Negatives

- After chamber 13, the game's difficulty spikes up unexpectingly, so for your first playthrough it can be a bit of a shock.

- The last chapter in the game is a bit too long. They buildup the confrontation of GLados alot. And in the last chapter the puzzle are not really hard or too interesting. It kinda kills the pacing for me, I would not have a problem with the game slowing down a bit at the end to build hype, but that blends into my next issue.

- The battle with Glados is not hard at all. The payoff for all the stuff you went through is lackluster. Here is how the battle goes. Hit Glados with a rocket, knock off core, grab it, put it in a cremator. Rinse and repeat 3 times and you win. I'm not saying Glados is not an interesting villian, i'm just saying that the fight against it is kinda bad.

- The length of the game is a bit too short. 19 chambers, a chapter dedicated to escaping the test chambers, and a final fight with Glados. That is all you get for the campaign. Even for a first timer like me it will take anywhere from 3-4 hours to beat the game. There is a time attack mode, and some advanced courses, but I will be generous and say they will add another 5 hours of gameplay. You have at the most about 10-11 hours of gameplay. Pitiful for a Valve title.

- The game does not have too much replay value. I bet by your 3rd playthrough you will know each chamber like the back of your hand, and you could plow through the game.

- Screw chamber 19, that is the only unfair hard part of the game for me.

- Ganeraly I think the game is kinda bare bones once you look past the portal mechanics and the pretty aesthetic.

Summary

Overall, I think I can look past some of the glaring flaws, because beyond the few blemishes the game is excellent. It is just a game I would not see myself playing again and again.

I give Portal a very solid 8/10.

Looking past the cool unlocks for TF2, you have a pretty competant Poker game with a nice flair. The character interaction is nice and feel natural, and the gameplay is easy to learn, someone who has never played poker before can pick this game up and learn.

It's fan service with a helping of back-room gambling and I love it.

The fact Valve still sells this for any more than $0.99 is terrible.

The game is dead as a doorknob. You can count the consecutive players on your fingers. Only servers left are totaly barren or just are fluffed up with bots who are just fodder that have the collective intelegence of a brick. No fun.

Also, there are many better arena shooters that are more worth your money. UT, Q3A, Quake Live, ETC. Why settle for the bland, dumbed down version?

Do not buy this for 4.99, or 0.99 or 0.49, only buy it if you want to have all the Valve games. Beyond that there is no reason for you to own it. And shame on Valve for still charging money for this.

Since CS:S is practically a graphics overhaul of CS 1.6 all my good and bad points apply to this game.

Only unique problem is that is kinda poory optimized for systems with specs well above the recomended.

8/10

Its the best gag gift since the whoopie cushion and fake vomit. Get it for 49 cents, gift it to your best friend (Worst enemies), meme accomplished. But make sure you get them the sequel too.

11/10 it's so bad, it's good.

Great game, it's 1990's fps in it's purest form. If you can look past the dated graphics, then you are in for a great time.

- The community may be pretty small, but they are still humble and not totaly toxic. (Looking at you Fortress Forever)

- The classes are all well balanced. Except combat Medic and Scout who can go totaly ham when in the right hands.

- There are only a handful of constantly populated servers left, but when you find them it's really fun.

- Very high skill ceiling. It's the defenition of easy to learn, hard as balls to master. So if you want a rewarding and chalenging fps, then this is up your alley.

- Pretty dated graphics, but again, try your best to look past them.

- When the game is on sale it is dirt cheap. I picked it up for 1 dollar, worth every penny.

8/10 - Good game.

On a sidenote before the real review. If you get this game, USE A SOURCE PORT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! The one packaged with Steam is just an emulated version of the game using DOSbox. In short DOSbox Doom has...

- No adjustable resoulution or any modern resolution support.
- Framerate locked at 35fps.
- No mouse support.
- No WASD controls unless you edit some files in the game. Only arrow keys.
- Barely functions, 9/10 the game just crashes on bootup.
- Alot of custom WAD's will not work
- All the bugs and glitches of the original Doom engine are intact.

I say use GZDoom. Everything above is fixed and upgraded, and so much more than I can list. Anyways, back to the main review.

The Positives
- A great and classic arsenal at your disposal, all serve a purpose. but no one weapon is best at everything. I say it's really balanced, except for the rocket launcher which I feel is the most situational in the game. The only time I can recall it being really useful is the Cyberdemon boss battle at the end of episode 2. The BFG 9000 could be considered the best weapon but ammo for it is pretty scare throughout the game, and it uses the same ammo and the plasma rifle, so save it for bosses and when you really need it.

- The difficulty curve is nice and steady, there are no points in the game where I felt the difficulty was cranked up for no reason. Except for Nightmare mode, which is intentionaly meant to be hard as balls and totally cruel to those who attempt it. And there are not many points where the game become unfair. If I die, it was usualy my fault. Either I was not prepared, I was not using the right weapon, or maybe I focused on killing the wrong enemies. There are times where they try to suprise you by hiding enemies behind walls and such, but as you go on you learn to tell when somethinng like that is gonna happen. Say you find a key card in a room with a suspicious lack of enemies to be seen.

- The gameplay, well, it's Doom. You can't really describe it without playing for yourself. But it's so smooth, fast-paced, intense, and sometimes even scary. You have to play it or you'll just think im sounding crazy.

- The selection of enemies is great. Though a bit lacking in variety if you go back after playing Doom 2. No Arachnitrons, Pain Elementals, Archvilles, Revenants, Mancubus's, Chaingunners or Hell Knights. The Cyberdemon is OP, 1 rocket can most times kill you instantly, but he is a boss character so I kinda expect it to be hard. And the Spider Mastermind is a total pushover. Imps are just generic goons who are just cannon fodder for the army of Hell. Pinkies are bullet sponges that in large number can destroy you. Human shotgunners are weak alone but shred though your health in multiples with their hitscan weapons. Barons of Hell are basically Imps that are bigger, have more HP, and shoot way more powerful fireballs. And Cacodemons can fly and shoot you from above, combined with their high HP they can be annoying to deal with in the heat of combat.

- The graphics may look really primitive today, but for the time they were top of the line. And they are distinctly "Doom". There has been no game before or since that has such a unique look.

- The music is marvelous, MIDI has never sounded so good. But I prefer using OPL for the best musical exprience in Doom.

- The story is sweet and simple. You are some space marine, army of Hell invades, kill them, the end. It's not really the story that keeps you going it's really the wonder of finding out what challenges the game will throw at you next that drives you to pummel every demon in sight.

- Level design is a HUGE step up from the identical looking mazes of Wolfenstein3D.

- Overall the game has stood the test of time very well, and even today brings many modern shooters to it's knees with the sheer quality and care presented.

- There is still a dedicated Doom modding community to this day. So even when you are done with the main game, there is so much more to expirience and to try out, the only way you get bored of doom is if you never try other things.

10/10 would play again and again and again.

Fortress Forever is like the missing fourth part of the classic Source multiplayer remakes. Neatly making a good companion for CS Source, DOD Source and HL2 Deathmatch.

Think of Fortress Forever as an alternate universe TF2. If Valve put it out in 2005, stayed more faithful to TFC, and used the realistic HL2 aesthetic instead of the cartoon face-lift. The gameplay is fast and smooth. Retaining the feel of a Quake / Unreal Tournament arena shooter with it's emphasis on neck breaking speed, tight knit combat and hard hitting weapons. If you have played TFC, you'll know what to expect and can easily transfer your skills to FF.

Sadly the only thing getting in the way of a perfectly solid Source re-imagining of TFC is that hardly anyone plays it. You may catch a filled server weekend nights, but any other time it's a total ghost town. This game just cries for more players, it's a fun game on those occasions you can play with others.

If you think that people over-exagerate the greatness of this game, then you are wrong. Play it and you will see why many consider it one of the best games ever and one of the best creations of mankind only rivled by sliced bread.

1000000/10

Worth the weight..
