So I was out on the last 3 days of the spring wild turkey season in Ontario (at a wildlife management area called Hullett Marsh, not too far from the eastern shores of Lake Huron and Goderich, Ontario). I didn't see any turkeys, but on Wednesday, May 31st, just after sunrise, I did come across a beautiful whitetail deer having her breakfast. She didn't see me at first, but she must have caught my scent, and looked up - we stood quietly, watching each other for a minute or so, and then she vocalized a warning call, and bounded off into the woods. They really do make the same sound as in the game! She was about 30-40m away, and it was a moment I'll always remember. I could kick myself for not having my GoPro camera, but nevertheless it made my whole trip worthwhile.
