EDIT: Alright. Since I wrote my initial review I have since completed the game and 100%'d it, and I gotta say; Nine Sols is a damn masterpiece.

Every masterpiece has it's flaws, I'm not gonna pretend it doesn't. Certain aspects of the gameplay can leave a bit to be desired, with certain attack combinations seeming a bit unfair, coupled with the lack of invincibility frames makes for a pretty challenging. This can sometimes seem unfair, but even still if you're looking for a game with quick, lightning fast combat that relies on learning the bosses patterns and becoming a parrying badass, Nine Sols is for you.

The art and music don't really need their praises sung, but I'll do so anyway. The animation is absolutely gorgeous and is taken to the extreme in several different ways. The mixture of 3D and 2D isn't new but still feels unique and interesting, ESPECIALLY during the final boss fight. The song "Smile at My Cursed Dream" and the accompanying boss fight is one of the best things I've seen come out of this genre, visually stunning and beautiful beyond words.

The game's story is... Dark; and that's putting it lightly. High amounts of animated gore are present in this game and if that's not your cup of tea, please keep that in mind if you choose to play this game. Dismembering, exposed organs, heavily implied slaughter and consumption of sapient species; this game is quite heavy. Despite this though, the story is beautiful and made me cry on several occasions. The characters are fun and likable (or extremely hate-able, looking at you Yanlao) and if given the chance can really grow on you. The natural progression of Yi, the protagonist, is gradual but told very well through his actions throughout.

Overall, this is an amazing game. It's not perfect, by any means, but that's more than okay. If you try it and you don't like it, that's totally fine too. You're entitled to your thoughts on it and are completely justified in your feelings about it. I give Nine Sols a 9/10.

I found out about this game a couple months ago and instantly wishlisted it. I purchased it within the first minute of it being available and it does not MISS!!!

The art and music is absolutely incredible, and as a big time fan of Hollow Knight it was great seeing a 2D platforming with a drawn style that was unique from the popular Metroidvania. As for the combat, it makes me feel like such a badass. That's a personal opinion of course, and I strongly urge anybody who decides to play this to develop their own thoughts on it. Fighting enemies can be a bit tough sometimes, but it feels so rewarding to finally beat a boss who's been giving you lots of trouble.

I think this game may have a memory leak issue or something similar, it's really hard to tell. If this gets fixed I'll be sure to update this review, but it doesn't change the fact that this is a super cool, must play game!!
