I missed out on this game many many moons ago on various occasions. One reason was because I had started minecraft, another would be my bias towards 2D games. If you can't tell I'm extremely snobby about games. Terraria grabbed be by the junk, stared me lovingly in the eyes, and took me on a ride I'm never going to forget all while whimsically sabotaging nearly every effort to get more comfortable in the relationship.

The snobby internet nerd says this:

-Terraria is balanced (I NEVER SAY THIS)
-Terraria is hard
-Terraria will take you to task
-Terraria will see you unleash your creativity

This is one of those rare game when you don't really need to know much about its premise or systems, you can just sit down after that first boot and then poof it's 100+ hours later and your family can finally tell the police that they found you.

to anyone seeing negative reviews because of lobbies:

The people writing them haven't tried quickplay yet, they ain't even played the game just jumped in , pay them no mind.

Pros:
intuitive combo system that enforces neutral play
Gorgeous beyond words
I-no is still bae ;p
excellent representation of 2D/3D fighting
fast paced

Cons:
Day 1 meta favors button mashing and recoveries basically make players invincible for 2 seconds regardless if they're back in neutral
The actual lobby system is dumb beyond words, just use quickplay and train while you wait for matchups
The extra colors are kinda lame
Where's friggin Johnny!?!?!

All in all this game will piss you off whether you're a pro or a noob as of week 1. Those of us that have been playing for longer than one iteration of the franchise know that changes are coming and they're coming fast. Be patient and stop listening to sweaty nerds on the internet complain about a feature that you don't even need use to play online.

after an additional 750 hours of gameplay, the following review still stands albeit I must call attention to other factors that may guide your gameplay experience:

-Large unit mass was nerfed a long time ago because people online complained about how a 50 ft stone statue couldn't be stopped by a buncha peasants with sticks, so now large units do not behave like they would in a "realistic" setting. So if you like physics, mod the mass back into the game.
-Growth requirements for settlements also received a nonsensical nerf some time ago, causing already slow growers like norsca and the Tomb kings, to become even slower at development compared to already speedy growers like the skaven.
-some factions have received more love than others, resulting in a lot of "old world" lords being completely irellevant in terms of skill trees and army buffs. Therefore making many lords utterly undesirable in lieu of others
-Beware DLC that adds factions. ikit claw? good, Malus Darkblade? good. Deathmaster Snikch, amazing. Tomb kings and vampire coast are absolutely the definition of "slow starters" and they really don't benefit from anything other than doomstacks.
-A lot of your time is going to be spent combating the predatory nature of the AI, once you learn to manipulate it the game gets easier, on higher difficulties you can't really play at all without manipulating it.

all in all review still stands. but now you have a better picture of what you'll be faced with.
-----------------------------------------------------

Someone felt it necessary to create mods to do away with AI buffs (cheats). Let that marinate, a modder. felt the need to not only examine enemy AI, inventory their insane cheat engine-like buffs, and get rid of them. After the mods, the game starts actually being a strategy game, wins, losses, enemies that refuse to vassalize no matter how long you box them in, normal 4X stuff.

easily one of the most fun battle systems I've seen of any 4X game.

I'm not recommending for the following reasons
-Abilities not working as intended; I'm patient with that but you might not be

-hamster wheel scaling; unless you meta, you're pretty much in the same place at hour 1 that you will be in hour 30+ just with fancier mods and abilities. dumping 100 rounds into an elite across multiple difficulties yielding only slight differences in remaining HP, is what I would call a hamster wheel. I'm running as fast as I can do deal juicy damage, but lvl 1 is the same as lvl "40" but with bigger numbers.

-early life cycle nerf; why you would nerf a class in a PvE title, is far from what I would call conducive of a positive player experience. Show of hands, who thinks we should nerf button input reactions in Life is Strange because players are progressing too quickly?

-repetitive endgame content; it's great we actually got some end-game content this time, but wouldn't it have been better if we had to play the game slightly differently when we got there?

-The Devs need to play DND: if you've ever DMd at least once, you'd know how to balance encounters better the next time. a wall of armored minigunners jumping from behind a corner is indeed a challenge. It's a frustrating one because unless you memorize the spawns, every encounter is an ambush. If I did that to my players every step of a game session, no one would show up to my table next week.

-A game with more perks than skill points is not what I'd call a proper RPG; that's like selling a car with three tires. at least let us complete a tree and 1/2 for more flexibility. *hint: This could end the hamster wheel without ever having to re-balance the math.

-Enemy animals = charge attack, charge attack, charge attack, immune to control, charge attack; Monster hunter wouldn't last as long if the monsters just spammed their fastest and most interrupting attack. Enemy attacks should be contextual, like when a grenade gets thrown at you to get you out of cover...every time you're in cover. Ai adaptability can change over time, but so far everyone but riflemen are going to charge directly at you; those guys will hang back and pepper you. I will take time to give PCF kudos because the enemy doesn't have perfect accuracy, they do miss and I can't begin to describe how refreshing that is.

-Early game storytelling is god tier, late game storytelling will make you wonder if they just ran out of time and decided to wrap it up as fast as possible. The late game plot points make sense, they do. But they're incredibly underwhelming basically turning the entire game's plot into a face palm moment.

as a sci-fi junkie, and an prior avid Destiny player, I hope to uninstall this game, come back after a month and find this review completely irrelevant. I hope I get to change it soon. But honestly, given the track record, I highly doubt it. so long as we have blue thumbs surrounding me ignoring the problems, this game is dead after launch unless they do more than fix glitches.

There's a lot of potential here. anyone who loved Bushido Blade growing up is gonna know the controls almost immediately so that's a plus. For early Alpha the physics are more or less ok, you'll be able to see that there is some fine tuning to do. There's a lot of room to grow here, these are the kinds of games needed on a competitive circuit needed because it isn't some lame tactic or meta to take advantage of but rather timing and input; go high when they go low. above all else you'll find the death animations fairly realistic and satisfying. Definitely worth the purchase if at the very least to get drunk with a friend and murder each other

BLUF: If LOTR franchise made a game like this, it would have never died. However don't play past 20 hours; Launch day anthem had a better loot system. Don't buy at full price to get the most bang for your buck.

Not much to say that hasn't already. They took what people liked about the first game and made it better. This is how "sequels" should be done. Melee combat is both satisfying and intuitive when you learn the dos and don'ts. It may seem like a hack and slash but this is a whole RPG; items and crafting included. I don't know much about the age of Sigmar so I can't speak on loyalty to source material. However I can verify a great level of detail has gone into character design and story progression; something that I felt was slightly lacking in the previous title. Just...make sure you read the ability names and make sure you understand what they do and stay with your group. Speaking of which, I normally hate gamers, but Vermintide 2 players are cut from a different cloth. People are helpful, willing to teach you the game, and insofar I've only been abandoned by two [dolphin noises]holes.

I feel safe recommending this game for any player for the following reasons:

-satisfying combat
-character builds
-plentiful players *Edit*
- DLC that adds content and not cosmetics
-good entry point for Warhammer fandom hopefuls
***************************Edit***********************************
I'm editing this review to include some factors that you should be on the lookout for

Reasons not to play include:
-overly grindy loot system dependent on knowing hidden locations
-a community that's 45% toxic
-Enemy spawns are a bit too strategic and overwhelming at times
-Not a cost effective purchase after reaching the end-game

AoW is a hard game to get the grasp of. But once you do, you actually get kind of excited at conquering a new world. The game's central focus is around landing on a fresh planet with the intent to either take it over via force or diplomacy or just outright destroy it with a doomsday weapon. Factions are separated based on species and technology, allowing players to mix and match as they please. This adds a great layer of depth and strategy to the game as space dwarf faction A won't have the same secret technology as space dwarf faction B; therefore forcing the player to take drastically different approaches to both factions in terms of combat and diplomacy.

Combat is done in the same format as XCOM but with many twists and turns that can take place via tactical operations and unit abilities. They're not the most dazzling displays available, but it fits the art and hex style movement well and can be just as nerve racking as any other 4X combat system as you struggle to maximize use of unit abilities, gain advantageous positioning, and a myriad of other tasks you'll need to accomplish to successfully win combat encounters.

All in all, this is not an easy game to lean into. There are many layers of management and strategy you'll need to put into play to get the most out of this game. it can feel stacked against the player or even woefully unchallenging, but as you learn what it takes to tame the various planet types, this can be an extremely fun game.

BLUF: If your'e a warhammer 40k fan, purchase is mandatory by decree of the emperor. If you want a 4x game you haven't played, save this for later or when it's on sale dummy cheap. If you know nothing about either, just hit the back button; I'm trying to save you some frustration.

Hey kids! do you like 4X games? Do you love warhammer 40k? Well you're in luck! 4X games come with a lot of BS attached. I'm not going to lie, don't play with enemy AI; I'm in the middle of proving these games cheat. Play with friends, dominate the planet, crush those pitiful humans beneath your metal foot. Rinse and Repeat because THE MAPS ARE RANDOMIZED!!! Great feature to have in the game as it prevents players from occupying the same spaces. The UI could use a lot of polish compared to other 4X titles, but it's a Warhammer 40k game, We're used to being disappointed. If you've ever wanted the feeling of leading a 40k style planetary conquest, this is it, it's the best you're gonna get and I'm thankful for the DLCs which add A LOT of content. It's a 4X game so the endgame is going to get ridiculously hard out of nowhere; expect to encounter squads of level 9 aircraft on turn 50 if you're playing against the AI. There's plenty to read about in item descriptions albeit some of the lore is off. I can't fault a development team for getting some things wrong because it's 40k...everyone either lying to talking out the side of their neck off about some stuff so buying a few of the books is not gonna help you make a game. Where was I....oh yea, I won't spoil the game itself but it operates on a turn based system that the UI [mentioned earlier] doesn't perform too well when you've got a decent Army; there's gonna be a lot of micromanagement of orders. Research tree's are short and sweet. Maps come in customizable sizes so there can be plenty of room to expand. There are mechanics that aren't explained too well, such as making multiple of certain buildings, the tutorial is great but if you've never played a 4x game, it will set you up for failure. Studios are trying to make decent warhammer 40k games so don't expect much quality of life features or ray tracing whoosiwhatsits. But for a fan of the...fandom it's a great addition to your towering warhammer collection.

BLUF:

-game is great, but the community and the dev team are the only real villains present in the Sea of Thieves
-They designed it on purpose, and it is fulfilling that role perfectly

here's why

*Disclaimer: I love the game but do not think you should buy it*

great game but i'ts understandable why it's dying. It's pretty as hell, the game mechanics are VERY intuitive, and it's a lot of fun getting drunk on the deck playing flight of the Valkyries on a Hurdy Gerdy. But the issue isn't with the game or it's content, but rather how the development team alleges that they can't include private sessions of PVE enthusiasts. Rare doesn't want to fix the griefing because they know people watch twitch streamers play it for the simple fact that they enjoy watching someone bully others. The game itself is a 11/10 project. I'll never take away from the amazing things that it accomplishes. However the excuse that they can't include private sessions is absolutely ridiculous from a professional standpoint; literally it would take them less than 200k and 300 man hours to get it done within a month and this is assuming we aren't talking about a Microsoft architecture [we are] that by it's very nature and design are able to scale as needed on the fly to support a service. Look up Microsoft Azure, it's all they and their kids use, so the problem isn't "more servers". The game is fun, but you are subject to griefers at any given time. Griefers that meet no form of reprisal (cooldowns, debuffs, bounties) that would be normal in any other pvp/pve title for players to actually enjoy their time and focus on playing how they want to play. I'm not recommending this game for the simple fact that you guys aren't like my friends and I, we enjoy bullying bullies with extreme and humiliating force; I love getting hatemail from red spirits. I want people to have fun when they play, I want people to enjoy being drunk on top of the mast while playing the banjo; but I know one day it'll get cut short for you because someone woke up that day wanting to ruin your experience THAT YOU PAID FOR just to get a few chuckles and low rank loot. That's not going to change, that's the experience of SoT. Until that changes, I can't recommend this title. You'd honestly enjoy GTA more.

The game is early access, crashes and glitches are going to happen. That's why you're not going to see me complain about them because I know what "early access" means and I know that a lot of issues are being tracked. Please ignore those negative reviews blasting the game for crashes, they've either got less than 2 hours of gameplay or bought the game without checking the system requirements. Also the reviews stating that single player is not viable, DO NOT KNOW HOW TO PLAY THE GAME. I thought that too, until I looked at the armory. Regardless of your skill level, you will be able to go in your area of choice (within reason), play and extract. In fact I plan on teaching people how to do it very soon.

Second Extinction proves that co-op PvE titles can be hard. Enemies are agile and their squad compositions can get varied at increasing threat levels. weapon builds present some pretty OP combinations if you actually try and get good at the game. This is an unusually well put together game for early access and you can tell that the Devs learned a lot from Generation Zero. There are a lot of things that need to be implemented in the game, but as is, it's quite possible to turn this game into a mainstay of your collection.

Graphically, if the hardware requirements don't tell you, it's a pretty game to look at with it's current map being a decent size. Explosions are a thing of wonder to behold as sometimes you'll set off barrels just to see the sparks fly. Dinosaurs suffer from dismemberment so that explosion is going make body parts fly and cover you in dino blood. Lighting ranges fro gorgeous awe inspiring scenes (rare due to weather changes) and outright ominous. Animations could use some touching up I.e the grenade launcher ADS. and there are moments where certain items (satchel charge) may glitch into the ground.

Sound quality is amazing because you can actually hear what's going on around you. That ambush from behind, yeah you heard it but there was too much roaring and gunfire. The ambience really does set the tone that we're behind enemy lines with ambush waiting at any moment and it'll help keep you tense and focus from start to finish of ever mission. Gun sounds aren't what you'd call realistic but they do make some pretty satisfying pew noises.

gameplay is a bit different to pick up seeing as we don't get many community based progression systems these days. player involvement in the various zones of the game will determine their difficulty or rather the availability of resources and size of Dinosaur squads. So if you're just gonna play in the easy areas, you're gonna make the game much harder on newer players. Each character has their own abilities that can keep them alive and deal a lot of damage in frantic battles, when combined with some absolutely absurd weapon upgrades the game difficulty should decrease exponentially if you fight hard for a solid two hours and upgrade a weapon of your choice

All in all, just buy this game. if they keep this formula while adding game modes, weapons, and events (all planned ahead), SE has the potential to be an industry hallmark of "Yes, people want co op/single player games but like this". It's hard alone but fun and with a squad you reap so many benefits and learn so much. Now that I've given this game it's mandatory post 30 hour game review...I'm gonna go play some more.
