After beating the first boss, I was terrified when I found out that I had to fight him again whenever I died, because he was so hard to beat the first time. But the game continues to increase your strength as you progress, and it gives you a taste of a power fantasy and just as quickly takes it away, making you truly feel the pull to keep playing. It also has so much variety in both items and skulls and extra abilities that you could play each life a thousand different ways, truly compensating for the fact that you have to do every single fight over and over whenever you die. There is always just enough variety to keep you going, making you think "This run is definitely the one."
