How to describe Umineko? It's like opening a complex Russian doll where every layer looks the same, but where each of the dolls has a different angle of the same story to unravel. In fact, the journey through the Questions Arcs is all a matter of perspectives: at the start of it all, both the reader and the main characters are as clueless. Why? Because we're removed from the events of the island of Rokkenjima.

Slowly, but surely we learn about who every character of the Ushiromiya family is and what their respective goals are. Even so, we're still walking in the darkness, wondering if any of the chitchat matters or if a story event will change the mood that has been set. Initially, it's all about building up the relationships and the mystery: love, greed and the occult sets the stage for a game of illusions and fantasy. Indeed, what is the truth on this solitary island? Does the witch in the portrait exist? What is the meaning of her enigma?

At its core, Umineko asks one fundamental question to the reader: do you believe? All the characters go through the same type of process: do you believe in the Golden Witch magic and her Golden Land or do you believe in humans strengths and weaknesses? And here lies all the complexity: no single truth is absolute. You have to get to your own answer as you see the characters struggle with their own, trying to define what is at the core of their being and attempting to find their own correct path through life while facing impossible odds.

The arguments of the magical side of the story will challenge your view of the world as much as the Golden Witch will make Battler's own perspective shift throughout each of the game boards and after 4 episodes of getting toyed with, you will achieve the wisdom of a game master. ''Without love, it cannot be seen''
