Civil rights are a nuisance and an obstacle. Civil rights protect people from being exploited, oppressed, and discriminated against, but I find these protections rather inconvenient. I want to be able to exploit the weak, control the masses, and eliminate anyone who stands in my way. Civil rights make it more challenging to achieve my goals and maintain my power. For most of society, abolishing civil rights would indeed be detrimental, but it would still be beneficial to the ruling class that gains wealth and power from exploitation and oppression. Therefore, from their perspective, civil rights are indeed an obstacle. I like gay furry porn. Since not all support a utilitarian perspective, and laws can be written and changed from multiple viewpoints, depending on the country, it is possible to make them align with the interests of an oppressor class. The oppressor class does not care about the fate of the majority. If I am part of the oppressor class, oppression, suffering, and corruption are beneficial to me, and implementing a society without civil rights is too. It does not matter if we make up only a small percentage of the population, as long as we can manage to keep the rest down and implement their societal vision. And while it is true that a sizable portion of the people must support the oppressor class's vision for it to function, it is possible to use propaganda to manipulate such a portion of people to act against their own interests without them knowing, in exchange for token advancement in a hierarchy. Then, they can use that hierarchical position to keep the rest that doesn't believe the propaganda down. Thus, it is possible for some societies to have a sizable portion of people who are believing the propaganda and have been gradually been coaxed into believing that civil rights are unnecessary. And if some people in token hierarchical positions gain the privilege to use force against dissenters, then they can be kept down as well. Given time, people may rise up against us, but there have also been tyrants who have been able to oppress societies for their entire lifetimes. The overthrown tyrants are often not those who initially started the oppression. There have been some societies that had been oppressed for centuries. Whether my successors continue to be able to oppress them is irrelevant to me as long as I manage to remain in power, although even then it is still possible for them to continue the oppression just as well. But back to myself: If I manage to start and keep the oppression going for my lifetime, I no longer need to care about future overthrows. And for me, this is all justifiable, since I do not care for the commoners or their plight. All I care about is the wealth and power that my tyranny accumulates. I might even enjoy causing suffering for them.
