Dungeons of Castle Madness manages to combine the gothic fantasy dungeon crawler with a top down combat system, allowing for the sense of wonder and exploration without clashing with the frantic action of combat. The game wastes little time in throwing you into a world of magic and darkness, giving you the vaguest of explanations as to where to go. From there, it is up to you to figure out what to do and how to do it, giving a sense of freedom. The story isn't forced upon you, rather it can be uncovered through finding pages and talking to people, making the world feel more alive and interactive than before.
The game features tons of weapons, armours and spells, in addition to four classes with various abilities and perks, allowing for numerous play styles and nigh unlimited customisation. Optional content litters the world, ensuring that there's always something for the curious adventurer. Customizable hotkeys are great as well. Art is great as well.

If I had any gripes with the game, it would be the lack of a map screen and dedicated pause button. The mini map is fine and all, but sometimes it would be nice to bring up a proper map when lost, if not just to see the scope of the land. Aside from a button in the corner, there's no real pause button, which means on the fly pausing isn't possible.

All in all, a nicely made game that will give you hours of action and adventure.
