I don't want to give it a bad review. There's a lot to like here. But the experience is tarnished by the ridiculous LAG for a game that isn't that demanding on even a bare-bones system that can run it.

Even opening a server for the Asian market didn't help. No matter how good a game is, if it hangs while you're in a fight or trying to get away from getting ganked, and then restore only when you're already eating the floor, it's going to result in a bad memory. Sorry Albion, you could have been a contender.

Loved the game. The ship mechanics are easy to learn, though the ground/away missions are sub-par. It's still an overall great game. BUT it went too far with improving graphics instead of gameplay. Now, you cannot play the game without a graphics card that runs Direct3D Hardware Feature Level 10. Thanks for the years, STO, but I'm dropping you for the foreseeable future.

DDO is, without a doubt, one of the most accessible yet deep MMOs that isn't demanding on your system. That 493 hours is only on steam. I've probably sinked thousands of hours over the past decade on this game.

Yes, the graphics are dated. Yes, it has bugs and lag problems. Yes, some improvements are needed to the UI and item management. But it has surprisingly fewer flaws than many, more modern MMOs to date. And really, all the cons are superficial and worth the trouble.

When you get past the manageable issues, you are left with a game that allows for both solo and group play, has engrossing quests and stories that mirror its tabletop origins, an in-depth character class/race customization that extends up to the endgame and rebirth (over and over again, if you want). And the community is on the whole friendlier than the toxic ones you would find in larger counterparts (*cough*World of Warcraft *cough*). It's nice when people recognize you by your name and the small "legend" you build as part of the community as you adventure with others.

DDO also keeps adding content, with new explorations into classic D&D settings like Ravenloft and the Forgotten Realms, and even the old modules like Keep on the Borderlands. And it's FTP, with the other premium services mostly for quality of life and expansion of your scope. Even then, you can grind for the premium stuff if you'd rather sink more time rather than the convenience of purchase through the Favor system.

I rarely do reviews, but this is one of the instances that I would do so, simply because the world right now needs as much ways to uplift. DDO can do its part, especially with ALL THE PREMIUM MODULES AVAILABLE FOR FREE UNTIL APRIL 30. It is the perfect time to join in on the adventure!
