This is one of those games where a fundamental change paid off. Unlike other Total War titles, this game is focused on diplomacy, rather than the outcomes of the battles. You are surrounded by nations on all sides, and shifting alliances make conflict a dangerous gambit. You are forced to negotiate like a human being, rather than steamroll everything in sight with an army of heavy units.

The AIs actually feel fairly responsive, and you'll develop long-term alliances with certain neighbors. A key difference between this game and previous titles is that you'll almost never annex an entire faction in one war. War is outright expensive, and the longer it drags on, the more the costs will weigh on you. Furthermore, all nearby factions will watch the warring parties, and the more devious ones might launch an incursion into your lands whilst you are occupied elsewhere.

This game is like a pit of hungry cobras, in that it's a constant back and forth between you and your rivals. You'll eventually begin to develop something of a mutual respect for certain enemies, and you'll find that different enemies use different tactics in battle.

I'd say this one is a winner!

Don't buy this unless you've got a seriously good computer. It's not a particularly special game, but the scale of the battles reminds me of LOTR.

The sheer number of galactic-scale war crimes I've committed on this game is staggering.

Even with a great PC, this game runs about as well as a 400 pound child with asthma, but it's pretty fun.

If you turn on the motivational mute then all the racist people become life coaches.

10/10 would force the alt-right to be wholesome again.

So my previous review from 2017 read "Long live fascist America!" but that didn't age very well.

Hearts of Iron IV is a fun game for WWII enthusiasts. Despite being centered around warring ideologies, it avoids placing anyone in the defined role of the bad guy or good guy, and instead allows players to decide what path they choose to follow over the course of the war. It's a sandbox strategy game, to be sure, and steamrolling people as Communist Japan never gets old.

Like any paradox game, the $40 price tag means that vanilla is lacking in basically everything, but mods certainly fill the gap in content. I'd recommend snagging this during a sale, as it's worth about $20.

This feels like a different game than the M&B that everyone is familiar with. Fantastic battles, historical accuracy, and expanded political options makes this DLC a winner.

The only real issue with this is frequent crashing (once every 2-3 hours).
